The video and comments about that English jumper girl video who lost her stirrups got me thinking about us as barrel racers and how often we keep ourselves in shape. One of my goals is to be a 1D rider, and in my mind that means I have to be physically in shape more so than the average person. How often do you workout to keep yourself in shape? Gym or home workouts, not counting working outside on the farm/barn/ranch.

I go to the gym usually 4 days a week and do at home cardio on my "off days". That's not including riding and barn chores which help get your cardio in without having to think about it. I also eat a pretty healthy diet I'll throw in "cheat meals" twice a week to keep in a balance but for the most part I eat clean, drink a lot of water and feel great.

 I work out 4-5 hours a week at my home gym, I stream workouts.   My motto has always been I will work as hard as I asked my horses too ( which is not very hard, lol).  I am 57 and will never be a 1D rider but I have one that is “front  endy” and if I don’t work on my core I get thrown forward.

It definitely makes a difference! My best year rodeoing was the year I ate as healthy as possible and was in the gym 3-5 times a week.
Since then I gained A LOT, and I could tell in my riding. I was behind my horse most of the time and my balance was off.
I'm down 20 pounds since January, and can really feel my balance and "hustle" coming back!! I made a run this past weekend and was really happy with what my video and pictures showed. I can see myself sitting centered and balanced, and I was riding much more forward and hustling my horse. Plus, when he hit a patch of hard pan that caused him to "buck" up in the air (his momentum sent him flying) I never lost my seat. Before, I would've panicked a bit LOL.

I workout 7 days a week 5 days at home I'm doing 80 days obsession from beach body. I go to Orange Theory fitness on sat and sun morning. plus riding horses and barn stuff. when I need a rest day I take one. I eat healthy 90% of the time drinks lots of water.

This. Because I was that English girl back in the day and could jump my horses over a 4' fence in just a halter and lead rope with no problems. But all I did all day was ride horses for people or go surfing or wander up and down the coast line on foot or on a bike.

Fast forward 15 years and I am sitting on my butt at a desk all day and riding a horse for maybe 1/2 hr a day? Yeah...Hello extra 50#!!! When I saw a video of one of my barely passable 4D runs it was disgusting and a huge wake up call. Especially on a colt.

Since I literally do not have time in my day to go to the gym, I brought work out clothes and do an HIIT work out in my office at lunch each day. It takes 10-20 minutes, but I work out HARD. Currently I have lost 60# doing this and meal prepping healthy meals. I also make sure that two days a week I do core and balance exercises. For example...today I can barely lift my arms because I did something called a side-plank-up. Sore today, strong tomorrow.

It really helps with not being left behind and making sure you are not just whipping around the turns like that old circle thing that used to be at every playground, but are actually moving with your horse and prepared to stay seated.

Our company has its own gym on site. I work out 3-4x week. I run/row/stair master 20 mins every time and then lift weights. Im working on core stuff, its the hardest part for me after having 2 c-sections.

I have lost about 40 pounds over the past two years and shooting for 25 more. It will be the lightest I have ever been and this is coming from a girl who has always had a gym membership for the most part. However, I have finally figured out a diet that is realistic and works for me. I have always been pretty fit, despite what it appears LOL. However, I have actually struggled more the last season because I am lighter and I keep flying around LOL. Probs because my horse is running faster but its annoying haha


ETA I workout 5-6 days per week in the winter. Summer I generally discontinue it because of all my household chores. I have my own hobby farm and take care of it myself. So between the horses and lawncare and all those other tasks, I am usually outside until 10pm as it is.

I used to spend 2-3 hours a day in the gym in my early 20s while going to school bc I had the free time. Lost around 70lbs and still ate BigMacs 2/3 times a week. I rode super aggressive and had loped for a cutter & got to do some practice cutting at work, there was nothing those horses could do to unseat me. I had invisible velcro on my ass. I did the gym thing 5-6 days a week and everyday did core strength exercises. Sit ups, crunches (of all varieties), leg lifts and things we did in dance class when I was in high school, 4 minute planks, all sorts of stuff. Then came the appendicitis and I was laid up from the gym, however I did start riding & entered 5 days after surgery. Not the best idea, but my entry was $500 and nonrefundable lol. Got a job out of college, sat at a desk all day, no time for gym...add 80lbs. I flop & flail about more than anyone and can't hardly get that same horse out of the 4D now, and it's only been 4 years I think. He's capable, I'm not. So things are changing this year. I have my 4 year old who has all the ingredients to be 1D, her siblings all are so far but if I don't change her talents will be wasted and she deserves better than what I can give her right now. So we're working on becoming our best selves for each other, or at least I am, not sure what her brain is thinking lol. You don't realize how much weight affects your riding until you fluctuate and even core strength plays an enormous role. Not to be an A***H****, but you see those girls going to the NFR, they're not overweight and a lot of them speak about how our physical shape affects our riding ability. You want to think you're a good rider either way but go from no workouts to even doing 50 sit ups a day for 60 days and you'll see a difference in your riding just from something that simple. I know I'm ready to get back out of the 4D, the money sucks back there! Lol

A HUGE motivator for me to lose the weight is my 5yo...he's on track to be the best one I've owned.
He went to his first two shows this month. The first was a small weeknight deal and he won the 4-D. The second was a 200+ entry added money show with some jam up horses entered and was 5th in the 4-D with a big slip at the third barrel. If I want to ride him to his full potential I have to drop more weight, just a fact of it being a speed event.

And like you said, I know I'm a good rider regardless of my weight, but that doesn't mean the weight doesn't hinder me!

I work out 5 days a week 2 times a day. Mon, Wed, Fri hard in the morning (HIIT workout) and light (Walking) on my lunch break. Tues and Thurs light in the morning and hard on my lunch. I have 1 hour for lunch and we have a small gym and walking track in the basement at work. I try to work on my core some everyday. I also eat pretty healthy lots of fruit and veggies and low calorie. I am small always have been but after I increased my working out and started working on strength more my riding and times have improved.

I try to hit the gym 4 days a week in a cross fit class. That class pushes me harder than I would ever dream of pushing myself. I love it! I've had less aches and pains and my core is strong. I won't be able to go 4 times a week in the summer but still plan 2-3 times a week.

Yes!!! I do pretty good in the winter but once spring/summer hits I for some reason find my self slacking. I could still work out in the morning, and I’ve thought about CrossFit, the closest gym to me is a CrossFit gym. The next closest one is only 2 miles further, but I’m wondering if the extra cost of CrossFit is worth having someone there to coach me...probably is...

I'm a former Personal Trainer and strongly dislike the gym. I workout at home 5-6 days a week between 40-60 minutes per workout. Every workout involves core strengthening.Yoga, weight training, cardio every week. I love kickboxing for hand eye coordination as well as using both sides of my body simultaneously and rapid movement changes. This helps my riding. I do not own a scale and don't weigh myself, it's an archaic measurement of health and is only a small factor overall. I have an 80/20 rule for eating. Lots of water, low carb, medium protein and high fat, lots of veggies. Not a ketogenic diet just a balanced one.

I do Yoga every morning but I don't consider a morning Sun Salutation a workout. If I do any other Yoga routine I may count that as a workout. 
The Company I work for has a gym so when I'm feeling froggy I'll hop on the treadmill and jog while listening to a book. But I don't really consider that a workout either.... LOL 

I used to lift every single day but stopped when I had my little one. Never really had the motivation to get back in to it. 

I eat very clean and stay away from most processed foods but let's be honest, sometimes we just need a whole pack of Oreos dunked in whole milk to make the world seem right again. 

Balance my friends, balance.

I workout at home for just 10 to 30 minutes in the morning before I go to work. It is hard for me to get up and do it, but it is making a difference. I try and either lift weights or ride the elliptical. When I don't get up early enough, I do two sets of pushups and two, two minute wall squats. I haven't lost much weight, but I have lost a few inches and I can tell that my core is stronger.

Had to have emergency full hysterectomy surgery, talk about loosing core strength and having a desk job in cube world made it even worse... When I was able to start a little work around the farm I felt like I was carting around a bowl of watered down jello where my core used to be:/ In the saddle was worse and I probably looked like humpty dumpty wobbling around up there - certainly felt like it which was probably unsafe (don't tell my husband that part).
The great thing about living in the country is - it's the country! Bad thing is there isn't a gym within 30 miles, so I got a home gym exercise machine - cheep off craigslist practically new. Have been working out all winter at least 4 to 5 days a week - eating better and got rid of the jello bowl belly:) When weather finally allowed a ride, my saddle felt feather light to throw up on my big boy and was very excited that I could keep my seat because he is a hand full on a cool day after not being ridden for several months. My goals are on my phones home screen - it's just a screen shot from my notes list - which really helps me with the motivation to work out when you have to look at it all the time. I had the list on my refrigerator, but when you are trying to stay away from the evil fridge it's not a good place to have your goals listed.

Just went back to the gym a few weeks ago after a 4 year hiatus. I lost 50+lbs 25 years or so ago after buying a younger mare and realizing I was handicapping her with my weight. I hit the gym, lost a few and it motivated me to lose some more, funny thing my old mare started clocking again too ;-) Anyway, became a gym rat. Then 10 or 11 years ago I fractured a couple vertabrae in my back, literally just making a run at a clinic. Doctors said the only thing that kept it from all coming undone was how strong my core was. My left leg would go numb in left hand turns and my right foot would feel like it was on fire. 4 years ago the pain in my hips and low back got to be so bad I decided to quit running as part of my workouts and then I just got lazy and quit working out all together. Last year I really realized a few times that I was having some trouble staying centered on my gelding if he had to make a big move. I have come to terms with I will never be the rider I used to be, you wont' see me whip a leg up out of the way of a barrel or stick like glue to a bronc anymore. Don't get me wrong, I was never a great rider but I was a balanced strong rider. I wasn't happy with the Pillsbury Dough Boy hanging over my pants when I sat down even though the scale hadn't moved, how the weight on my body was distributed had , Winter fat had become Spring rolls type of thing.. so back to the gym I went. I have been taking a product called Protandim for a little over a year now, my fiance no longer has to help me to the seated position first thing in the morning, I can ride 3 horses and not be so stove up the next day that it hurts to walk. There will be no running for workouts for me, I have come to terms with that, so low impact cardio is it, just have to do a bit longer. With the back injury my legs are still a little weak, working on that but it is what it is, concentrating on the core.

Not a big gym fan here. I feel like I get plenty of exercise with our daily chores, plus riding about 4-5 head, and chasing around a toddler non-stop! I used to sit at a desk 40hrs per week, and I am so glad that I don't have to anymore!

At least 6 days a week of running. I'm addicted. It started because fall of 2016 I decided to enter a figure competition. It's super strict and I had to loose nearly 50 pounds for it. I was planning on competing this spring but got more of the running bug last year after the competition. I did 4 half marathons and several other small races. I have a half coming up and plan on doing a full in May. So.... I run A LOT. lol And I still do weights 5 times a week. I really enjoy it.

I do tabata 5 days a week and take my dog for a 3/4 mile run 5 days a week. I am a computer tech and usually have about 15,000 steps a day. I also ride every day except Sunday.  I am 62 years old.

I might be an odd ball here.... the gym is my getaway. I put my music in and I pretend no one else exists. I love my horses, but they are not where I let off steam. I love the gym. I am part of the few girls that want to look big & bulky. I thrive on lifting. I don't do much cardio. Just enough to stay "in shape." I just prefer big muscles over a slender figure. This being said, I have always been a bean pole. I hate it. I want curves, and I want healthy, "don't mess with her" curves. When I really get going, I work out 5-6 days per week for 1+ hours per day. I can be very strict on my diet (not in the eat less way- in the eat what it takes to look the way I want way). I am currently middle of the road. I workout 4-5x per week and I am moderately strict on my diet. It fuels my self esteem which in term fuels the way I process life. I thrive on feeling good, and working out and being proud of my diet makes me feel good.
