Location: IL | So I have been riding my OTTB mare in a Tammy Fischer saddle since I got her as a late 4 year old. However, she will be 10 this Saturday and I have noticed that as she has matured she's getting a more prominent "shark fin" withers like many TBs. So far she doesn't seem to have any soreness but I have been concerned about her saddle fitting her. I know when I purchased the saddle, I was told they are really meant for more level backed horses. Should I be concerned about her saddle eventually not fitting or possibly needing to switch her to a treed saddle to allow for withers clearance. I do use a CSI pad with my saddle. Thoughts? Opinions? Experiences? |

| If the saddle has been broken in to her, you may not have issues. Then again, you might.
Completely, IMO - I'm not a fan of CSI because they don't have any sort of wither cutout or clearance. There's not really even a way to vent them up away from the withers. That would be your issue with the sharkfin more than anything because the pad/saddle combo is going to sit directly on them and pull down on them when cinched up.
I personally prefer my JBN on my sharkfin guy, WITH an open wither 5 star pad. I had NO problems once I went to the open wither pad. He's got plenty of withers too!

Location: South Georgia | This does not quite answer your question, but I came across an ad/posting on FB this morning about how Bob Marshall has a peaked and non-peaked saddle configuration. Obviously, the peaked version was for high withers. I did not know this. |

I love 5 Star pads, in fact that is what I originally used with my saddle for her. But I actually had to switch to the CSI because she got very back sore with the 5 Star and was getting sores rubbed on her withers. I know my CSI does have the contour up off of the withers, atleast mine does? So she does seem to have some clearance there. I was just wondering with the way the treeless saddle do not offer the opening over the withers like a treed saddle, if perhaps it would be a problem long term/down the road. Like you said, may never be a problem or might be. lol |
