I was thinking of trying a worm test this spring in lieu of my normal worming rotation. When is the best time to give this? I live in the frozen tundra - are parasites dormant over the winter? Just wondering if it will be worth it to give this time of year.

All you need to do is take a few samples from their piles in the morning and have the samples checked by your vet. I have mine done a couple of times a year so I know I have my bases covered. If they have an issue it will show up in the manure regardless of the temp outside.

I did fecals on my two horses when they first started becoming popular a few years ago. It is not worth the money as neither of my horses had more than a few eggs found in their fecals which didn't help me anyways. We just deworm twice per year. Late spring/early summer and after the 3rd or 4th hard frost.

i will say that i dont think i ever wormed for tape worms but had a fecal done last year and was told that i needed too. i felt like it was money worth spending. however this year im gonna mix the sample from a couple horses instead of doing each one individually. That was pricey.

We have a big tapeworm burden in our area. I use Equimax and it takes care of them. I alternate between Equimax, Quest Plus, and ivermectin.
Clean samples for a couple of years so now I don't do samples.

My vet was out yesterday and I asked her about this. She said no matter what the fecal says, she’s going to tell me to use something for tapeworms (for this area and time of year). She said not to do anything again until fall, and then we’ll do a fecal and go off that. I’m in north Georgia.

I don't understand why anyone needs to test or is hesitant to just setup
a good deworming program and go with it. Especially when you can buy
zimecterin for $3 a tube from Jeffers.
If a horse is wormy you will see bad hair, an air belly and poop will turn
dark from blood and worm poop inside their digestive system.
Quest is good for 90 days and zimecterin 60 days ..

Pregnant mares ALSO get zimecterin ~ 10-14 days prior to foaling date..
to clean the mare out since Mother Nature commands the foal to eat
some of its mothers poop to start their good gut bacteria so they can
digest whole foods .. and not end up with a tummy full of worm eggs ..
JUST DO IT AND USE THE WHOLE TUBE!!
HOW TO: Keep horse from spitting anything out ..
Set tube on half a tube ...
squirt into mouth upwards from corner of lips
hold head up and let them lick to coat their mouth
give the other half per the above
