I’ve been looking for a new saddle and just found a josey Ultimate that a friend has for sale. I know nothing about the josey saddles. What do y’all think about them? My only concern with this saddle is the gullet is only 6.5in. The horse I’m wanting it for is 16.3hh and built like a tank. So I’m a bit concerned about saddle fit.

Make sure you ride it before you buy it.  I had one and hated it.  The forward hung stirrups force your feet forward and don't allow you to pull yourself forward when your horse accelerates away from a barrel.  Some people must like them though or there wouldn't be so many out there.

I totally love mine. I have had several over many years. I would make sure that the tree fits your horse. I have a large horse and he takes the wide tree...look at the serial numbers and you can tell which tree for sure that it has.  I love the forward hung stirrups and have no trouble getting up. In fact, I need to keep my booty down more LOL I am currently looking for another 15" MJ in fact.

I've sat in the different styles in the Josey store and like the way they feel on a saddle stand if that helps any lol.
I was never really saddle shopping when I was at a clinic to want or need to try one on my horse.
We did try them on my mom's gelding while at the last clinic we went to and neither the regular tree or wide tree fit him...but he is built very weird. He's flat backed, very short backed, huge shoulders, nonexistant withers LOL...and both were too wide for him. Finally figured out he needs a smaller gullet, he's smaller than he looks.

I had one, and was so happy to get it sold. The seat was hard as a stone, and the extreme forward hung stirrups did not work for me.

I love these saddles and have rode them for years.  I will say I do prefer the older models as they have raised the cantle height now.  I love to ride in a flat seat cutter, but hard to find a smaller seat (14.5 back in the day).  I think these sit very similiar to a cutter....falt seat (yes hard seat) and the taller horn.  The forward hung stirrups I think are better for those that are aggressive and ride a hustle forward style.  When I would ride a saddle with regular hanging stirrups my feet would get behind me becasue I was always up and hustling.  I agree ride it and see how it fits your horse and you.

If you can try before you buy!!
I've been riding in them for years and can't get out of them.
Sold and rebought twice. I love them! I can put it on a wide variety of horses and I get them chiropractored every now and then and I've never had one come up with a sore back!

I have one and love it. Make sure the seat is large enough for you or you will not be happy. Mine is a 16 inch seat. My trainer weighs about 100 pounds and rides in a 14 inch seat. Also my horse is 16-1 and weighs about 1250, the paint in the avatar. The regular tree fits him fine.

I had one once. It is the only saddle I've ever ridden in that hurt me, BAD! Every time I rode, the bottom of my pelvis (the bones around my crotch) would ache and throb. I'd even be sore days after riding. I hated it. Nothing was wrong with the saddle, but it made me HURT!

I love my two, but I did have to go with a 16 seat and a wide gullet, it fits all of my horses and me. I ride with my feet a lil forward so the stirrups are just right for me. Ive always had the worst luck breaking a saddle in, with these you can make a run in it the first day and it feels right. Also, in my billy cook saddles I was getting behind my horses, this saddle keeps you in without that trapped feeling to me.

I have an avenger and I really liked it with my 16 hand horse that was very hard turning. It had the forward hanging stirrups and with his turning style, I seemed to like the saddle a lot better with him than with my smaller horse I have now. I don't ride it with my smaller horse. I need to sell it.
