I have a 5 year old. Birthday is April 1st. I've been to 2 dentists this week that are surprised when I tell them she is 5 because she has caps on all her incisors but 2. The ones that are still there are not even loose yet. She was on the track so the idea is being tossed around that the breeder lied about the birth date on the papers to get her into races sooner. Her lip tattoo matches the papers & I've called aqha to confirm. Has anyone had experience with 5yr olds still having caps or should I question age? Dentists both say it could be a late bloomer but they said it's very rare.

Horses can retain caps. If they are loose and ready, they can be taken out. They don't lose their last incisor caps until 4.5 years old anyway, and horses don't all read the book and lose their teeth exactly as planned.
I have watched my horses lose their teeth over the years, and both of my 4YOs still have 3YO looking mouths.
I don't see how anyone would want a horse to race falsely younger. that puts her at a disadvantage. That's why race people want January babies so they are as old as possible when they race.

Normally the teeth don't lie, so something not quite right with the birthdate would be my educated guess. do you have a photo of front incisors from the side and did the horse have any molar caps present at same time?
