This morning we had to put down my doberman, Scarlet. She was such an amazing dog, I've had her for so long. This hurts so bad. We noticed her having a very badly bloated belly this morning and she was trying to vomit but nothing would come up. We took her to our vet and they did x rays and found that she had a twisted gut. Very badly twisted. And her heart rate was thru the roof. After sitting and talking and of course crying .. we decided not to do the surgery, the vet told us with her being so old and as bad as she was twisted she most likely wouldn't have survived the surgery. We had the kids come down to the vet to say goodbye to her. I'm devastated beyond words right now. My home feels empty without her. We loved her so much

Im so sorry.

Our doberman went in for emergency impaction surgery in December. She made it through surgery, but passed away the next morning in recovery at the vet. She was 3 years old and still a large presence missing.

I’m sorry. :(

Your post brings back memories of wonderful dogs that I've lost and brings tears to my eyes just thinking about them.  Cats too, of course.  So myself and many on this board know "exactly" how you feel and how much it hurts.   Scarlett was lucky to have been part of your family.  So many dogs never find this kind of home.

I'm so sorry!!! I will keep you and your family in my prayers. My dog twisted him stomach last year, was extremely bloated, trying to throw up, and I did surgery as vet said it was a 50/50 chance, and he pulled through!

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this happening, she was running around playing with the new puppies last night.. does anyone have any idea what causes that? We all stayed right next to her, the vet brought her a nice comfy blanket to lay on.. It was so sad, it's like she knew.. she just laid down and she looked at each of one of us, poor Jacob, he was hysterical.. she gave her a shot to relax her and then the pink one... we were all crying and so was our vet. We are having her cremated and we will keep her urn in our living room. Such a tough day but we all pulled together as a family and I'm so proud of my kids for being each others comfort and showing such compassion. My home feels empty ...

Unfortunately, dobermans are prone to bloat and twisted stomachs.
When ours had her emergency surgery, the vet went ahead and tacked her stomach while he was in there because it’s not uncommon in the breed.
She had a very long life with you - I can’t imagine how you and your family are feeling. ??

Yes, I got her when she was just 6 weeks old... I had her for a little over 13 years.. which from what I understand, that's pretty old for a dobe. She was my side kick. And she loved my kids.. she'd stay with them when they go outside, watching them. I smile when I think of her chasing dragonflies out back in the pasture, she had this unique bark when she did it.. she never caught one but she didn't let that discourage her from trying. Scarlet brought us all together today and reminded us to love one another, even my boys hugged and comforted eachother. We picked up 2 lab puppies yesterday for Jacobs benefit. We are keeping one for Jacob, but the other little girl is growing on me so much I just love her. So my house is full of labs.. I have a 4 yr old chocolate lab, he's confused right now, he was always with scarlet , he's just sticking by my side when I cry he gets up and tries to get in my lap. I think he knows..

When this happened to my dog, my vet said that he sees it a lot when dogs are free fed kibble. What they do is eat a whole bunch of food, drink a bunch of water, they go play outside and it causes bloat, and bloat can lead to a twisted stomach, in my case. My vet does not recommend free feeding, which is what I had done my whole life. Now, my dogs eat, I wait 45 min, then they get water, and never do they go outside and run around right after they have ate. It was so scary for me! My vet stapled his stomach also during surgery to prevent this from happening again. My vet said he sees it a lot of large breeds that eat a whole bunch at once, then drink a whole bunch then go run around.

I am so very sorry for your family, having a hard time typing thru tears. They just take over our hearts when they come into our house, be they equine, feline, canine and all the in betweens. My Dan is coming out of winter so thin, and my heart is heavy hoping I don't have to make a decision I'm not ready to make yet. . . . . Many prayers for all of you; now you have a guardian angel watching over each one of y'all.

Dragonflies.....that's a great visual.  My Cocker Spaniel chases airplanes that fly over our house a little on the low side.  Good thing the pasture fence is there or she'd chase them all the way to McConnell Air Force Base.

Thank you all.. it's a little better today. I got choked up on my way home from dropping kids off.. and I had a moment where I was holding the door open to the house a little longer like I use to do for her when I let my lab in.. she was a little slower getting up those steps.. I miss her so much it's painful. I know each day will get a little better for us.

I do too. I told her I'd be seeing her again. She just has such a huge peice of my heart, she was my comfort when my dad passed away and she was my comfort when I first got divorced, she was there for each one of my babies was born.. I try to force myself to remember the good fun things we did but all I can think about is seeing her take her final breath and the way she looked around at all of us when she gave her the first shot to relax her. My lab is clearly depressed, he's not interested in eating or playing with the puppies. He's just laying under our dining room table. Breaks my heart to see him like that too. My husband said he's got to mourn her too and it will take time, just like for us.
