SO, when you see broodmares for sale sired by the TOP barrel racing sire left open with a well bred foal by their side because the owner has too many horses.............does that mean the market is now flooded??? or the young horses/broodmares/stud fees/breeding fees are way too HIGH???? Breeders are having to sell way below the cost of getting the foals on the ground/broodmares breed, etc.??

Thoughts???

The ones I follow, it means they had trouble getting them in foal most of the time. Some believe in giving mares off every other year and some just don't want to mess with a baby every year.

Sometimes life happens and getting mares bred takes a back seat.

My first reaction wouldn't be to think the market is flooded, I would have to agree with WYO in thinking there was a problem with getting the mare back in foal. I also agree with Sox that yep, sometimes life happens and breeding a mare back could take a back seat to family emergencies, other priorities, etc. Maybe it's getting to be too much for some breeders and their kids aren't interested in continuing the legacy/tradition, call it what you want- just look at the Wagon Wheel Ranch.

Breeding is an expensive endeavor, and we don't always see what is going on behind the scenes, causing people to buy and sell horses like they do. There's a saying, "if you want to make a million dollars in the horse industry, you have to start by spending two million."

I will say, there are some screaming deals out there right now on 2-for-1 and 3-for-1 packages with mares and foals.

I agree sometimes life happens. The owners get older, sometimes illness happens and nobody else in the family share/has the love of breeding so its time to sell or could just be the owners just lost interest.. I dont see it as someone trying to pull the wool over someones eyes selling a open mare or a open mare with a baby along its side. The buyer just needs to pay more attention and have the mare vet check if paying big bucks and know a little history of the mare. I know a few people that loved breeding but they just got to old and had to sell out.

WELL SAID!!
************************************************************
DANG .. sure sounds like you are talking about me!!

As the years roll by and
your knees give out,
tail bone is creaky,
joints are achy,
your balance is gone,
reaching under one for the girth makes you dizzy,
short horses seem taller....
swinging a leg over one ain't gonna happen,
round penning is like riding a merry go round ,
using a wheelbarrow is a must to carry a bale of hay,
and things you used to have done before breakfast
are still unfinished when the
sun is going down ...........
TIME TO HANG UP THE BRIDLES ...

It makes you feel like the Texas Aggie that returned a chainsaw
to the dealer complaining about taking 2 days to trim a tree.

Dealer asked him if he had broken the rope pull on the chainsaw ..
Aggie said:
WHAT ROPE??

During spring breeding season is when open mares are sold and
are what buyers are looking for to breed to their own stallion or
breed to their favorite match for a particular pedigreed mare.
A foal by their side shows she is breedable and can carry a foal
full time!!

***************************************************
It is broodmares that are open and being put up for sale after
August with a free rebreed that you need to have checked out ....
OR as a broodmare owner you are tired of dealing with goofy stallion
owners or stallion stations. ... or FedEx or UPS .. lol
***************************************************

As for myself, I have enjoyed my goofy friends, crazy family and even
my drugged up barn help and several bipolar stallion owners and
trainers.....
And then one day you realize that all of these people
you have enjoyed visiting with (some more than others) is now on
an entirely different level.
You have to abide by the visiting hours at
your local hospital or funeral home and at the local drug rehab in
one of the homes for the elderly or even jail.

The vets and other business people I have used for years are now
showing the same symptoms I have ...
just too old to go naked anymore ......lol ..

I am going to pull a sneaky with my last breeding to my last and most
prized mare. I found a very dynamically bred cutter, reiner, working
cow horse, roper colt 2 years ago and have watched his famous sires
and tremendous dams in various arenas and events over the years.

This young sire has so many high dollar (LTE millions) in his first 4 generations
along with more PE millions of progeny earners top and bottom I could not
resist breeding an athletic dirt bike to my dirt track high speed sprint car.....

This coming Saturday my dirt track sprint car will be checked to see if she
got in foal on her foal heat cycle or not .... with this hot, cold, hot, cold and
constant spring wind it is going to be a miracle.... so give us a thumbs up!!

With the stallion being a dark bay/blue roan and the dam being a dark gold
palomino .... babies color is going to be like tossing a coin or a card trick.. lol

2019 foal pedigree
http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/automatic+cougar

I will be updating photos to put them on the BHW site in the near future ..

Ok.. you color gurus .... what color is foal likely to be??

I have an AAA daughter of Juno Dat Cash Open, breeding sound.  But, Time, $$ and the value of foals doesn't make it worth breeding her.

Because... Take the one stallion I believe would make a great Cross $4500 stud fee, plus: vet fees, shipping, mare care, foaling, the cost of rasing a foal (providing happy and health) halter breaking, etc and hoping for what ?? How am I going to see return on investment?

Well, I'm not so she's standing in the pasture fat and happy.

This is reason that I think the really nice mares are being left open..........the high cost of getting that foal on the ground and no return on your investment. The one ad that really caught my attention stated that they already had too many horses SO they were leaving the mare open but this mare is the daughter of the #1 barrel horse sire. So, is the market flooded, youngstock has to priced high to just break even or are the foals priced to high so they are not selling???

Even if there was a failed breeding attempt, its not always the mares fault. Stallion did not ship well, shipment time was not ideal for the mare because of holidays and stallions schedule.
Maybe she's a mare that always goes over, and getting later and later and later.

If shes open with a colt right now, she could be left open to breed new owners choice. We are just getting busy breeding up here.

At the end of a day, you should preform a breeding soundness check anyway.

Id rather buy an open mare anyway than the paperwork runaround with the bought in-utero foal anyway.

1- some mares go into lactational anestrus and are really difficult to get in foal with a baby on their side. doesn't mean they are subfertile. One of our mares we catch ever year shes NOT nursing. And shes 23 this year.
2- sometimes things happen and the mare just doesn't get bred back. Be it personal issues, timing, money, etc..

3- some people get in over their heads and breed too many horses for their ranch to afford. Doesn't mean the market is flooded, sometimes people just accumulate too many and money gets tight.

Also depends on when she had a foal. If she had a later foal they may just chock it up to a loss one year and back her up for an early foaling date the year after.

and sometimes it doesn't matter if she's by the hottest sire going, if she looks like a mud fence. She might notbe worth breeding. Crazy phsyco is another reason. Not all mares should be bred, regardless of how they are bred.

Because a $2500-$4500 stud fee plus vet fees is a lot of $$ to put out, *hoping* to sell the own-daughter-in-foal for a lot of money. I’ve owned own daughters but didn’t always have the $$ to breed.

If you’re worried, ask why she was held open and get a breeding soundness check done.

I’ve bought mares left open and later had no problem getting them in foal.
