During treatment for Ulcers, what day do you generally start easing them back in to riding?
Currently on Zesterra. Started it only yesterday but want to make a plan of attack as far as getting him back in shape goes. No change in diet except added more hay since he is stalled at night now, only changed his excercise routine 2 weeks prior and didn't up his dosage before doing so. Started chewing to produce saliva to calm his stomach the day before yesterday so I upped his dosage yesterday. Still chewing his cheeks today but not as bad. Have not ridden since Tuesday. He is on the loading dose per the label instructions until he can go back to his Maint. Doseage.

When you treat with Omeprazole ( Only proven treatment to cure ulcers) they start feeling pretty good almost immediately. Certainly within a couple days. My vet did not advise a change in routine while treatment was going on.

My mare had a severe case and was a miserable witch and in pain for about 7 days of treatment with omeprazole before I'd even consider working her again. She happened to be lame at the same time (perhaps a cause of the ulcers), so I didn't ride her at all during treatment.

I did not have any luck with Zesterra for treatment ,I do think it may be good for maintence . I have tried a lot of diff. things and Omperzole was the only cure . I give 1/4 of a tube for 28 days then once a month after that i give 1/4 th a tube for 8 days . The day after i give Gastro guard or ulcer guard I can tell a big difference.and will ride them . The Ultium feed has helped also.

I've never stopped riding during treatment, I just stayed away from barrels for a week & then started hauling again. I get a paste compounded from my vet of omeprazole, it's $200 for a full 28 day treatment & then I also started on Gastro-Plex. Haven't had to buy the omeprazole for almost 2 years now & I was doing several 28 day cycles a year. So it's been nice, I highly suggest leaving your horse on some kind of preventative all the time. It's a lot easier that way. But I've never had a vet tell me to stop riding, so I'd get back on if it were me.

If they are eating good. I would start riding after 5 days being treated. The big thing is no grain. Alfalfa Hay/Timothy and turnout. Renew Gold will help with getting her digestion improved.

Thank you for all the replies. He has good results with Zesterra. He stays on the Maint doseage year round but I up the doseage when the weather changes or I haul and he's perfectly fine. So this round is my fault for not upping the doseage... I think I'll give him at least a week off from heavy riding to make sure he's good to go. Thanks again all.
