I'm always curious on the what do you feed posts how much everyone is feeding? Do you feed the recommended amount? MORE/less? Do you WEIGH your feed or just measure by scoops/coffee cans? How much extra supplements, how much hay? Alfalfa vs. grass? I feel like this all factors so much into this equation when people just focus on which feed is best but leave out but I'm feeding also 20lbs of quality forage and this and that supplements. Plus top dressing oil/rice bran etc. I thought it'd be fun to break it all down. I'm currently trying to tailor a good feeding program at my place so wanted to hear everyone's insight.

Feed half pound of renew gold senior to each horse. Unlimited forage and a scoop of forco. Hopefully winwillows will chime in, but if you feed a good forage based diet, they don’t need a bunch of supplements. Winwillows puts it easiest “ people feed their horses into trouble and try and supplement them out. “

Ours get Renew Gold (1/2lbs to 3/4lbs) twice daily, 2oz Forco once daily, Omnis cubes (4-6lbs depending on the horse) and out on pasture 22/7, with round bale in the winter.
Also the horse I run gets Aloe Vera and Lubrysin.

We feed about 1 scoop of hay-rite cubes am and pm for each horse. It’s probably about 3-4 lbs. We did used to weigh our feed but haven’t in a while. They are turned out during the day on a couple acres with grass, and in a stall with grass hay at night. They have a salt rock. Pretty much it. Ridden 4-5 days a week. Both are almost fat and since switching I think I will have to cut back on their cubes.

I'm currently feeding 10-20 lbs alfalfa cubes, depends on the horse housing situation. The underweight mare I have in a dry lot is getting the high end the horses on pasture 24/7 get the low end, 1 lb max-e-glo rice bran with a bit./mineral supplement. Since the thin filly has kind of plateaued Went ahead and added D&D Nutritions Exemplify 6 lbs a day as well.

High quality alfalfa is the base and I keep both teff grass and orchard around. I mostly feed alfalfa but throw in both teff and orchard daily so they always have something in front of them.

Purina Strategy - 1/2 scoop which when we weighed way back when I think is just under a lb, 2x’s a day. Scoop of Platinum Performance. My hotter barrel horse and my colt both get Purina Gastric Care as well.

We feed a mix of grass and alfalfa hay off our own fields mostly...speaking of...anyone want to come help bale tomorrow when it’s 95*?

3yo: 6lbs 14/8 pellet plus minerals (1.5 scoops twice per day)

Broodmares: 5lbs 14/8 plus 2lbs Blue Bonnet Intensify Growth + OCD pellets (1 scoop 14/8 + just under 1/2 scoop B.B.)

Yearlings: 6lbs Blue Bonnet Intensify Growth (1 scoops twice per day)

My horses are turned out on what little grass we have (not much at all) and get free choice Teff round bales. They look better than I’ve ever had. I average $100 per horse per month.

Have you taken a look at the ingredients of Purina equine senior? It’s not a fixed formula and most of the ingredients are not very good for ulcers in my opinion. Lol

Yes I actually have .. but it’s all the mare will eat . She won’t stay on any other feed .. she’s on ulcer guard every day , so I’m not worried about it . I’m sure people wouldn’t agree with that either .. but it’s all that works for her . I doubt most people truly deal with ulcers as bad as this horse gets them . It’s what works & keeps her comfortable .. otherwise she is miserable . To each their own . Fixed formula or not , I’ve seen that senior work miracles time & time again for skinny horses .

1.5lb Renew Gold, Top Of The Rockies alfalfa cubes, pasture and Bermuda Hay if pasture is low. I do have my 18 yr old on 2lb of Renew Gold Senior and Pride Of The High Plains alfalfa cubes (he refuses to eat any other alfalfa cube) Even Top Of The Rockies what are from the same state, same fiber, fat and protein percentages...he knows the difference.

#1 - 12lbs alfalfa cubes twice daily, horse guard vit/min, 1lb renew gold and orchard grass 24/7. he's running bred and on the leaner side.

#2 - 3lbs alfalfa cubes twice daily plus 8lbs orchard grass twice daily, trifecta by horse guard. she's a heavily muscled, big bodied mare and on the Jenny Craig diet!

I'll Play.....

Easy Keepers
1/2 scoop or a little less of Tribute Kalm N Ez 2xs/day
4 oz of ground flax per day (for allergies/inflammation)
1 scoop msm
1 oz actiflex

Hard Keeper
1 heaping scoop of Kalm n Ez + 1/2 scoop of Accelerate sweet feed
1 scoop Foundation Formula
1 scoop msm
1 oz Actiflex

All get pasture at night, 1-2 flakes of grass (fescue) & 1 Flake of alfalfa during stall hours. I've weighed my feed just to know about how much they are getting, but I mostly go by amount. Cost for just feed and hay for 1 horse is about $100/month. The easy keepers would be closer to $75 a month per horse because they eat about half the grain as normal.

It took me about a year and a half to figure out exactly what my guys needed:
Yearling - AM: 1 cup RG, 1 cup oats, 4 oz flax seed, 1 scoop MVP Mare N Foal
PM: 1 cup RG, 1 lb oats, 4 oz flax seed, 1 scoop MVP Mare N Foal

Gelding - AM/PM: 1 cup RG, 1 cup oats, 4 oz flax, 1 scoop Exceed 6 Way.

They arent on a very big pasture so they get unlimited grass hay and 2 big flakes of alfalfa morning and night. My gelding looks the best he has in several years!

I've had to change mine a couple times the last couple years due to availability. Getting ready to change again because of costs. Here's what has been working well, just too costly at almost $180 a month for 3 horses and that's just grain not supplements. Plus I board for $300 a month per horse on top of buying my own grain...

4 Year Old: Progressive Performance HF (5lbs) ($27 a bag for a 40lb bag)
1 Cup Nutrena Boost
MVP Gastro-Plex and Exceed 6-Way

19 Year Old: Progressive Advantage Alfalfa Diet Balancer (2lbs) ($37 a bag for 50lb bag)
MVP Gastro-Plex, Exceed 6-Way, In-Sync 4

25 Year Old: Progressive Advantage Grass Diet Balancer (2lbs) ($35 a bag for 50lb bag)
Progressive Envision Fat Supplement (1lb)
1 Cup Nutrena Boost (was trying to switch from Envision to Boost)
4 cups timothy grass pellets
MVP Gasro-Plex, Exceed 6-Way
Cushings medication & turmeric
1/2 serving BioMane (does amazing things for his feet)

So yeah, gets expensive when the 25 year old is a pasture pet and the 4 year old isn't running yet. I used to use Tribute but the closest dealer went out of business, but another local dealer just put in to carry it. So as long as they get it I will be switching them back to the Kalm N EZ as it can work for all 3, which makes my life easier and it's a whole lot cheaper. The older 2 lived fine off of 1.5lbs a day of it and when I bought my 4 year old she was eating around 2lbs. So it will be a lot more cost effective at $17.50 a bag. Plus they all eat at minimum 20lbs of alfalfa a day, if they're on the road I keep hay under them 24/7 unless they're in the trailer

Right now I am loving my feed bill. My pastures are doing so well my horses need like 0 grain which my wallet LOVES!

Right now they get 1/2 lb Ultium Gastric Care once a day with their supplements (T.H.E. MM Blends with a couple pumps of Healthy Coat to ensure they eat it) and 1 cup of SuperSport and 1 cup of Amplify. They get a flake or two of hay in their stalls while they are in during the day in slow feeders to keep them busy and then on pasture all night.

In the winter that routine changes A LOT. Just depends on the time of year. Heck, by the time August rolls around I'm sure the feeding mix will change yet again once my pastures burn up.

We've taken our horses off of pasture - trying to farm grass and resetting our pasture with soil samples and letting it grow. So there's some tuning to go into our program this year. I measure by cups, I haven't figured out their percentages like I did the cattle yet - I'm slacking for the horses.

As of right now:

They each get two cups of alfalfa pellets, two cups of beet pulp pellets (no molasses), and two cups of ground soybean soaked 3x a week. Sometimes they'll get spoiled with alfalfa pellets on the off days but no more than 6 cups if so.

My gelding gets that plus a scoop of THE performance blend.

They are on an alright quality grass hay round bale right now, but again we're learning this grass farming and this year's crop will be 10x better than last years.

I am thinking of purchasing a loose mineral they will have access to in the pasture, haven't found a feeder I'm happy with.

They've got a good weight on them, shiny, and great feet, just want to keep them up on their vitamins while we're fixing our overgrazed pasture.

I have 3 horses right now on about 3 acres. Its not a dry lot, but the grass is limited.
I put out a 50 lbs bag of D & D Nutrition Alfa Lux cubes a day, and feed each horse 1 lbs Pro Force Fiber AM and PM. No added supplments other than that.
One horse is 27 and fat as a tick, my running horse has really darkened up her coat color and is running better now that she ever has, and then I have a 2 year old in training.

Only thing I add is a mineral/vitamin (platinum performance).

Mine have access 24/7 to pasture, made of of native prairie grass. I'll also, when they eat it, give them a forkful of 3rd cutting alfalfa. But as the green grass comes in they actually turn their noses up at the alfalfa.

I also feed 1.5lb (which I weigh on a scale)  daily of Purina Performance Impact, 2 oz of Simply Hemp oil, and a scoop of Platinum CJ.  They also get 5ccs of Zesterra daily and on race days they get dosed with Ulcergard.

I'm currently feeding 6 lbs Exemplify and a lb of rice bran to my underweight filly she's getting close to being just right so hopefully can back her off with 17# alfalfa cubes and free choice pasture she's about $200/no currently. 10 lbs alfalfa and a lb rice bran with vit/min to the easy keeper on pasture 24/7 probably close to $100/mo and the other I have in training is somewhere in the middle.

Good pasture in the summer and or hay in winter. Small pasture during the day for summer with access to the barn and what ever pasture is up in the rotation at night.
Twice a day I feed - 1 lb of alfalfa pellets, 1 lb alfalfa cubes, 1/2 lb Renew Gold (yes I put everything on a scale – even if I have to purchase a different brand I will weigh it and yes I have found discrepancies) added supplements are 1 scoop Platinum Performance GI and 1 scoop Ortho-Chon II joint (a scoop more of GI on race day prior to). Been on this program for 6 months LOVE IT!!! My crew looks awesome, preforming better than ever and it’s easy – I no longer feel like a mad scientist and I’m moving a lot less bags of feed - bonus.

HayRite mini cubes and Bluebonnet pellets are keeping my horses looking good. Each performance horse is fed 1.5% of his own weight in mini cubes daily. This 1.5% is split into a morning and evening feeding. Each performance horse also gets a solo cup of the Bluebonnet pellets AM and PM. MVP Gastro-Plex is mixed into AM Bluebonnet.

I feed a 14% mix from the coop for the yearlings and broodmare, along with free choice brome, fresh water daily, and I've been giving the yearlings alfalfa.

Nutrena Safe Choice Original; lush grass pasture; Tifton hay. Six-year old gets 6 lbs. Safe Choice / day split morning and night; 15 year old mare gets 3 lbs. Safe Choice / day split morning and night. Horses are inside from ~ 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day during spring / summer and early Fall with free choice hay and spend evenings and nights on pasture. They have free choice salt. I keep things simple - both horses look great, are sleek and shiny. Seem to be quite happy. I do mix a big hand full of alfalfa with their grass hay in their stall hay bag -- mainly because I know they love it and I kinda spoil them.....

The other 2 get ultium, renew gold and muscle mass, unlimited excellent hay in slow feed nets at night in the barn. They all get turned out early morning till about 2 in the afternoon.

No.. I've got 2, one on ultium and one on the renew gold sr. I throw in a handful of the ultium with his renew gold every now and then. I didn't word it correctly. None of them get over 2lbs a day on their feed and they are in plenty of good flesh! I don't believe in pouring a ton of grain to one. The younger horse just blooms so well on the ultium, I keep him on it. Must be that amplify supplement in it.

I feed a great quality alfalfa/grass hay and Progressive Nutrition grass balancer to all 4 of my horses. I feed 1lb to my 2 year old, and 2 lbs a day to my barre mare, 30 year old mare, and my slaughter rescue I just took in. They all are out on pasture and get all the hay they want. It costs me $95 a month for hay and grain per horse for 3 horses, and a little more for my barrel mare, as she get Exceed 6 way. That is the only supplement I feed. My feed program is simple and straight forward.
