My poor babies! they have whelps all over this time of year. I am already leaving them up at night and when they get turned out they get doused in mosquito/fly spray. Is there anything you have used that you can actually treat the pastures with? I have 2 horses in a 25 acre pasture that never come up with whelps and my 2 babies are in acre pasture and they come up covered in whelps. I dont want them out in the big pasture for multiple reasons. Is there anything you have used for pastures like a spray or granule that will help with the mosquitos?

We live in the land of mosquitoes -- the Mississippi River Delta. In order to cope, we keep our pastures mowed to about 4 - 5 inches -- any higher and the mosquitos totally swarm in the grass. We keep the grass mowed short around the barn-- really short and keep things weedeated to the ground around buildings, etc. We have high velocity fans in our barn stalls and the horses can access their stalls 24/7. This time of year I bring the horses inside during the day to avoid sunburn and the heat -- but they come in around 8:30 a.m. - 9 a.m. since early morning is a quiet time mosquito wise and they can graze steadily for several hours. They go back outside around 5 - 6 p.m. and are able to graze steadily for several hours until the mosquitoes "rise up". Of course, they do end up spending quite a bit of time inside under the fans at night to avoid the mosquitos. I've used just about every insect spray ever invented and our all-time most effective / favorite is Gordon's. I buy it at Tractor Supply in gallon jugs. It also has a sunscreen in it which is nice. We also have auto-sprayers in our barn. I do not know of any overall pasture treatment spray you could use that would last long-term -- not sure you would want your horses grazing grass that was sprayed with something strong enough to kill mosquitoes for days on end....

We keep our pasture shredded pretty short. I keep their water trough just half full so I can keep it clean and use dunks if I need to. Same for waters in the barn.. it's more work to be constantly filling but it's worth it so they have fresh clean water daily. Agree on keeping grass and around the barn weed eated. Around my house , we keep it mowed short and I use cutter spray every few weeks on the lawn... the kind you attach to your water hose and spray. Seems to really help combat those nasty critters! And of course keeping horses vaccinated and I spray them with b free of flies or tri tech once a day.

The best thing you can do is keep your pastures short during mosquito season/out break I call it. They can get crazy around here when we have a rainy few weeks but right now we're good since rain has been a no go for us latley, .

we used concentrated garlic one year mixed it and sprayed it like spray it worked really good for a couple months .... don’t remember what it was called but they use it a lot in parks and schools

Look into having a private contractor come to spray at dusk. I pay about $60.00 and he drives around that pasture. Remember that mosquitos hatch about 5 days after the rain.
