So I've tried a 7" gullet Circle Y Extreme Performance, 7" gullet Martin Crown C and 7" Deb Sibley...my horse has pockets behind his shoulders and I'm having a tough time. I've tried 3/4" CE pad, 3/4"CSI and 1/2" Best Ever pads with all 3. I've got dry spots on all 3 and all three dont feel like they sit down on him...almost like they are perched on top of him. Here are a few photos.
Dry a Pozzi Pro with a #10 tree. They have more rock to the bars and typically fit a horse that has that pocket right behind the shoulders.
OR a Roohide with the Shad Platt Modification. This fits the same type of horse.
In my opinion and with everything I have been doing lately with saddle fit, you need a smaller gullet. The tree is too wide with is sinking lower down on the withers which is causing the tree to rock to much. If your tree fits the horse you will not get the dry spots and the rock stops. I just wish I had access to multiple saddles, I'm sick of looking for a saddle then buy it and realize it still does not fit.
I'll agree that you need something with a bit more rock to it.
My gelding has big shoulders and has the dips behind them. Bestever built me their newest pad that has no padding in the shoulders, and has the padding directly behind the shoulders. Once you figure out the exact placement, it helped my gelding tons. I did go with a saddle with less of a flare in the shoulders this time and it seemed to help snug everything up without being too tight that he doesn't sweat.
May the odds be ever in your favor in the saddle fitting game...
Try a Saddleright Pad and allow those muscles that are atrophied behind the scapula a chance to repair and rebuild. If you buy one, you can ride it for 30 days to make sure it is doing what it needs to. If for any reason you don't like it, just return it for a refund!
