Location: The Lone Star State | I have never used fly sheet in 30 years of having horses but the whelps on my 3 year old are awful, i have tried all kinds of fly/mosquito spray keep stuff clean etc. I think he is just more sensitive. Its only this time of year so I thought if the garlic supplemements I ordered dont work I will try a sheet as a last resort but its HOT in Texas. Will it make them sweat and over heated? |

Location: Bandera, TX | My mare loves her fly sheet. It even has a neck cover. I think it actually keeps her cooler. The other horses are sweaty and she is not even though she usually sweats more than the others. I cant think of the brand right now, but it is one of the higher quailty ones. |

Location: Central Texas | I tried one of those higher priced fly sheets and neck cover. My poor mare was miserable in the humid heat. She would stand in the shade and basically pant and sweat like crazy. It scared me. I will not use one again in this kind of climate. (Central Texas) |

Location: LA Lower Alabama | Get a mosquito net styled one. They are less clingy to the body so I tend to only see sweat on the chest. The biggest issue is horse flies get trapped underneath and can tear them up. |

Ok good to know its the horses tearing up the sheets not the flys I was thinking goodness those must be some huge flys if they can tear up a fly sheet {now that was scarey thinking}  |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | And to answer the OP's question, 100+ heat is just too hot to be putting a fly sheet on unless they are under a fan and shade the whole time they are wearing the sheet .  |

Location: South Georgia | I was asking myself this same question yesterday. My new guy is white, and not only does he get sweaty, but he also rolls in the dirt. LOL Every day, I look like I have a black paint when I go to the pasture. I wondered if the fly sheet would help keep him slightly cleaner and perhaps keep some of the rays directly off his back. It is just so hot and humid here and there is no shade in his current pasture. :( |

Location: Oregon | The only fly sheet that doesn't make my horse sweat like a hog is the Saxon 'Basic' fly sheet. SUPER lightweight and a very breathable mesh that is super airy. |

That is one of the ones I tried and my mare was miserably hot. Interesting that it works for you. Are your horses stalled? Mine was out in the pasture sweltering. |

Location: mi | We dont have your kind of heat but any of the ones that are the heavier mesh made for taking a beating are going to be too hot. The mosquito mesh is the best for air circulation but someone was right the green heads get up under there because it is stiffer and almost does more harm then good during that season. I find squished bloody spots of dead green head under them a few times a week, when the horses have had to roll to kill them biting suckers. SStack has made a new mosquito mesh one that is just mesh across the top then a lighter flowyer weave on the sides and back that might help that problem a little since it will cling to the sides of the horse and maybe stop them from coming up under it. I have yet to try it but that might be a good option for you. It is not a cheap one though.

My mare never got overly hot but we get to 90s and humid as our max here. Which is pretty hot for us people who are also used to -30 
We don't get the heat up here in the 100+ degrees like you all but this "Fly Turtle" one has alot of reviews of people who live in FL in humid heat and they love it,and I saw some from AZ as well. I agree that the ones that are the heavy plastic durable stuff are going to be the hottest, and then the ones that "hang" the softer mesh is going to be better but this "mosquito mesh" seems to be a nice inbetween durable but sits off the horse and allows air flow. http://www.turtleneck.biz/flyaway-turtle.html |

She is in a dry lot and the only shelter she has are a few trees in one corner of that paddock. I also use it on her to prevent her coat from fading out. She seems cofortable with it and less sweaty than the other horses who have no blanket. She even wears the neck cover. |

| Put on a fly sheet, stand out in the sun in 100+ degrees and see how it feels to you. If you are too hot in it, it will be too hot for your horse. I don't think there is a fly sheet out there that can keep a horse cool in 100+ degree temps with the kind of humidity you have down there. You'd be better off spending your $$ on good fly spray and use it twice a day if you have to. In the heat of summer I spray my horses AM and PM to keep the flies away because none of them work up to 2 weeks like they say they do. If you use an oil base spray it will last longer as the water based ones will evaporate quickly, especially in warmer temps. Good Luck. |

My S/O is an asphalt paving and grading superintendent. He has paved in the middle of summer in Las Vegas NV, Phoenix AZ, and all the cities in between including various cities in Texas ... When laying down asphalt with the sun beating down on you outside temperatures are easily 100-120 degrees, plus add the temperature of the asphalt itself is around 200-300 degrees. Many construction workers will wear long sleeve shirts including my S/O! Not just because they are protecting themselves from getting sunburned, but they say you really do stay cooler.
Again I don't use fly sheets but I have to wonder if maybe it could have the same effect on horses. Does anyone really know how much a fly sheet has changed their horses temperature? |
