We're getting an Amish cart pony tomorrow. I primarily want to use her for driving, but she is broke to ride. I have three kids who I'm sure will want to ride her, but I don't know how big is too big to use her. She's 35" tall. My oldest is 8 and weights over 50 pounds.

I was planning on doing the heartgirth/length measuring to get an estimate and going from there. I just didn't know if 20% applies to minis as well. :) Thanks!

Most 35" minis (measured at the last mane hair, which is how minis measure) are going to be roughly 300lbs give or take depending on weight and type (stockier vs more refined), I think you'd be fine with a 50-60lb kid but wouldn't go much bigger.. Most mini people will generally tell you around that weight is fine for the bigger (34-38") minis. I breed, raise and show minis, as well as shetlands (have around 60 head currently) and have seen them ridden by kids that size quite frequently without issue.
