One of my horses is gonna have to have bone chip removed from front ankle. Anyone have a bone chip surgery and would you do it again. I have no choice if I don't do it he will be a pasture pet. He is lame on it but has another issue that I am getting him over before we can do surgery. I know that it is a common surgery just wondering people's experiences. thanks
Best horse I ever owned had one removed from his knee. I rodeo and jackpots both on him and never had an issue with anything what so ever. It was like he never had it before
Yes! I had two bone chips removed out of both front fetlocks on my 1D rodeo mare. She had the surgery when she was 6 years old. Simple, easy, got the job done and gave her the winter off. She is 11 years old now and WINNING everywhere she runs! She has NOT been injected or had issues with her legs. I would for sure do it again if needed and it would not make me deter from buying a horse with bone chips either (depending on location, etc).
While working at an equine hospital, I saw numerous racehorses and barrel horses have chips removed and then go on to have successful careers. I have only seen one where it ended badly, and that was the owner's lack of proper rest/rehab after the surgery.
