What do you use to keep flies off a cut? We have an2 week old foal with an open sore on the inside of her hock. It was pretty much healed but the flies being so bad this year it is not healing.

I like using Swat Fly Repellent ointmint too for my horses to keep flys off cuts and theres a clear so you can use it around eyes and face to keep the flys from bothering eyes.

I've been told to put honey on a wound. It helps it heal and keeps the flies off because they don't like the stickiness. We've used it before and had good results.

Bag Balm is what I have used in the past.
I didn't think about the aluminum bandage for this?! We keep It on hand when we dehorn calves but think that would work well too.

Earlier in this thread I recommended coating the area with a thick layer of Vaseline several times a day and using fly spray -- why? I've had some surgery to have melanoma cancer removed - it was not nice. I was left with big horrid incisions stitched up -- and what did my doctor tell me to do to heal the nasty incision? Keep it coated in Vaseline. It healed beautifully. Every time she has had to remove a 'bad' place, she tells me to use Vaseline -- that's it. Sometimes, it's the simple things that make life beautiful.
