It has been a loong time since i have bought a mare. A aqha mare. and I know there is 5 panel testing... Is it pretty much a deal breaker if the mare and her dam were not 5 panel tested? only the mare's sire was tested and n/n. and the mare had one foal and it was n/n. sorry if I sound ignorant but I am this is all new to me. I don't breed horses I just buy them/ride them lol. But I found this nice little mare and want to try to get my homework on all this.

If you are concerned, require a test on the mare you are buying. Her mothers report doesn't matter unless she is n/n and in that case you can skip the test on the mare you are buying because she will be n/n.

I have 4 broodmares and none are tested. I took a mare to West Texas to breed and the stallion owner took me around to look at his mares. His are all AAA+ mares and none of them are tested. He probably has 30. I know what bloodlines have issues and pretty well steer away from these. MOST racing lines do not have problems.

Require a 5 panel on the horse you're looking at. If they are n/n for all, that's a start. Even though I would not cull for the two recessive disorders on the 5 panel for a riding or breeding horse. I would go a step further and also test for the P2 variants before buying. But I breed horses and I want to know what I'm producing. I know they will find more in 2, 5 or 10 years. But you can only do what you can do at this point. If you're scared of getting a problem horse, testing for what they know about now is the best way to avoid problems.
