Not sure there’s anything more humbling, or gratifying.

Today we decided to look like we were maybe 30 days green broke in the warm up pen. Wouldn’t pick up a lope to save his life, shouldering out everywhere. At least when we did go down the alley we were all business and looked halfway decent (compared to everyone else, we did really well for where he’s at).

Of courses there’s a good sized furturity/derby here this weekend so everyone around me is on their nice, going well French Dash Fling and Streaks and my goofy cowhorse over here looking like he’s not ready for a walk/trot class at the count fair Then again, he’s here for the ambiance not the race itself.

Lol! He’s been going places with me for a couple months. Today he just decided to be a butt. My stalls aren’t together so he’s having to learn to survive without his buddy (who despite being vastly more experienced may be taking it harder than the colt). And the warm up pen is really deep sand, which he’s also not use to - so he’s tired and doesn’t want to play. Luckily his response is just to pretend he doesn’t know how to do anything, instead of dumping me or something ridiculous.

It’s all good for him. He’s really cool, a barrel hunting machine, just needs finesse and miles.

I'm so there right now. My 3yo has been exhibitioned at two jackpots with like 5 barrel sessions under his belt total. He is good and broke yada yada. First exhibition, second barrel race- he was no longer broke. He was looking around, all of a sudden no lenger worked laterally etc. Just DUMB. I was so frustrated. Took him back down, made a circle and came back and BOOM. Wanna be barrel horse. It was like his head was elsewhere and needed a warm up.

Haha - thanks! I like a good story, some of my favorite folks to follow on social media I follow just for their way of writing and telling stories.

They are humbling, but worth it, whether they turn out to be great or just help you take your skills to the next level. This one has challenged me quite a bit that’s for sure, but one day I think it’s all going to click and he’s just going to be running the pattern. At least that seems to be how he’s worked so far.

Colts are weird & I am not a big fan of hauling horses their first few times. I took my 4 year old to her first barrel race ever in May, she spooked at a kid on a mini. She's pastured with minis, her best friends are minis. This mini must have been the devil or something. All weekend, snorted and bolted away from this thing. There were other minis/ponies there that she didn't care about, it was just this one particular one. She wanted to be in the next county as fast as possible.

LOL mine forgot that there's a third barrel after the second this weekend...sat great and started the turn and then it was just weeeeeeeee!!!! Let's tour the arena!! Got him back in my hands and going the right direction, and he went and smoked the third - thanks bud LOL.
Worked him yesterday to make sure he was feeling OK, and yep - he felt great and was back to turning correct, just had a baby moment!

My now finished, steady Eddie, solid as a rock, mare used to spook. She used to spook AT THE BARRELS. Would pick a random barrel and dart off away from it. Heaven forbid they be different colors or change out the barrels between exhibition and the race.
