Why is "Trace" mineral all I can find?  I didn't know that trace mineral doesn't have near enough mineral for an adult horse and that's what I've always used.

Recently I was told that there's literally not enough mineral in these blocks to even bother buying them, so my question is what kind of mineral do I actually need?  I'd like free choice if possible, do I have to buy it loose?

We provide free choice salt blocks and feed a scoop of Platinum Performance each day with one feeding. You can see the analysis on their website, including the amounts of “trace” mineral. We’ve been super pleased with our results on it. We had an outside horse come in for training in April go home this week - his owner immediately asked what we’d been feeding him.

I prefer to feed a measured amount vs free choice - 1. I know they’re getting it. 2. I know they’re not getting too much. Horse we had growing up would eat mineral like it was candy. He wasn’t deficient in anything, would just eat whatever was available. This would lead to him drinking an enormous amount of water and needing to have his stall stripped clean every other day. Turd.

If you have FB search hoof rehab help. many are recommending Ca trace/or california trace mineral. It feeds the horse and repairs the hoof with great result. Iron seems to be a big issue in your horse not shedding and bad hoofs plain white salt is to go to salt.

My vet actually makes their own loose mineral mix. So we can either feed a scoop or feed free choice. Depending on the needs of the horse! We also keep plain salt blocks out and the trace mineral(red) ones out for them
