 My Heart Be Happy
Posts: 9159
Location: Arkansas | I lost Dan about an hour ago; he's my first horse to have to let go. Y'all have been beside me for questions about feed and supplements and just for me to say how much my old guy means to me. Chandler is out of town, which makes it even worse. When I called him he at first said "no," but when I told him how he looked and was acting, he knew it was time. Chandler was a year and half old when I got Dan; it would have been 19 years in September. Sean was with him at the end--i was a coward and couldn't do it, but I wanted someone he knew and loved with him. My heart hurts so bad; please pray for me to get peace and know that I did the right thing. . .. |

| I'm so sorry for you loss.
If it's any consolation, I was away from home when my beloved childhood buddy, JP, had to be laid to rest. My mom called me afterward and was pretty terrified to tell me, but I knew he was surrounded by my family and vet of 20+ years who all loved him dearly. I regret not being there, but they all loved him just as much as I did and certainly made the right decision.
Rest in peace to your beloved Dan. |

Location: Arkansas | Thank y'all so much. He took a big piece of me with him, but I'm gonna concentrate on the good memories like was said and not on him being gone. Sean just buried him by the barn in his favorite dusty rolling spot. He said our other three were laying down by him when he got there with the backhoe. Guess we humans don't have a monopoly on grief and loss. . . . |

Hugs debra, never a easy thing to do, and I think as I get older its get harder on me when something like this is needed to be done, I know your heart is hurting since Dan was so special to you, but like I said Dan had a really long and good life having you as his human that loved and took such good care of him. We take care of our 4 legged babys better then we take care of ourselfs and I know he had the best care that anybody else could have giving him, hugs |

Location: Arkansas | I do feel some guilt, but deep in my heart I know I did the right thing. Sean had been trying to prepare me for several months now that this very well might be Dan's last year; I just figured it would be this winter. I think what's making it harder is that Chandler isn't here, and Doodlebug was very much his as much as mine. It would have been harder on C had he been here tho, so maybe that's why the good Lord let things unfold like they did. (If C had been here, I would not have been watching fish, and no one would have known Dan was in distress until this morning. So I truly believe God worked this out the best way possible for Dan.) Chandler sent me the sweetest text after I called and told him what was happening; my son helped me handle this awful thing even tho he was 9 hours away. He said he was praying for God to give him and me peace, and to give Dan deep green pastures with lots of fillies!! |

That's what Daddy said, never have to worry about him hurting again. And that's what I'm focusing on. Thank y'all again for sharing prayers and your experiences with your 4 legged kids |

Location: Arkansas | The barn is way different. . . . I cleaned his feed pail out last night--he didn't eat much the night it happened--but I can't quite bring myself to clean out his stall completely. I told Sean no one else is going to use that stall right now; as much as I love all of mine, I just can't bear to see anyone looking over that door besides Doodlebug. Faci (he had been with Dan for almost 18 years), who isn't the most "please rub on me all over all day" type, came up to me in the barn after I sprayed everyone for flies and just put his head against my chest. . . . Right now the other horses are my biggest comfort as well as my biggest heartbreak, if that makes sense. It's like he knows and he wanted comfort too. |

Location: OH. IO | I had a really different experience today.I was at the hotel near the hospital my new grandbaby was born at.I walked outside to check the weather. Its a beautiful day with rain.So I did my praying outside in the rain.I thanked the Lord for bringing our baby into the world safely, and for keeping my daughter safe as well as many other things. Then I thanked HIM for the rain, and prayed for rain for our BHW folks that desperately need it.Then I THANKED HIM for all of pets, the ones we have, and the ones that have been in our lives, which brought me to pray for Dan and for peace in your heart. Those empty stalls hurt so bad,but eventually it makes sense to fill it with joy and another loved animal who deserves it too.ALL OF US ON HERE ARE SO BLESSED TO HAVE WHAT WE HAVE. And it's so hard to let them go.Im thankful your Dan didn't go during the winter,in the cold, and im thankful you had to watch the fish that night.Im still praying for you,and sending you hugs my friend.

Location: In The Snow, AZ | Don’t feel any guilt about not being there when Dan left. I’ve yet to lose a horse, but we had to put our Mastiff down last September, unexpectedly. We were at the emergency vet and I told my husband it’s our duty to be there for her, but I couldn’t do it. I think it was better for us to not see her leave.
Sending prayers for you and your sweet family. |

Location: Got Lobsta? | OH I am soooo sorry for your loss. To have to make the decision yourself is so hard to do. You were not a coward, your heart is too big to see him go. I did the same thing when I have to put mine down. I couldn't be there, but had someone special holding him. He was so lucky to have you. Hugs! |

| Oh goodness Debra, my heart fills with sadness for you and your family. You gave Dan a better life than most horses ever experience, and I know he took the best care of you too. Animals (and people too) come into our lives for a reason, and he was there for you throughout the ups and downs. Take comfort in knowing you were there in his greatest time of need, and he is running through green pastures with all the tall grass and mares he could ever want! |
