It’s super hot and dry here !! My horses tails seem dry. Heat is sucking it out of them! Cowboy magic and the like works good temporarily but what is something i can use that really works? Thanks !

I love using coconut oil but you have to be careful using it if pastured with other horses.
It keeps their tails SO soft.

I just use the human hair conditioner Suave, but with the heat I dont think anything would be long lasting, like you said the heat just zaps out the moisture. I like how Suave makes my horses mane and tails feel and smells really good to.  And its cheap, every time I go to Wal-Mart I pick up about 4 or 5 bottles of it.

Strawberry Suave is what I use and then I spray in Its A 10 leave in conditioner. Doesn't take much, but it makes their tails soft and silky:)

I use "It's a 10" on my hair - LOVE it. I think you can get it at Walmart but it's not cheap! I get it from my hairdresser because she gets a discount at the beauty supply store.

i buy it from my stylist. It’s spendy, but it’s amazing. They make a hair mask too that would be awesome. Since I only give like one bath per month for like 4 or 5 months, I can justify the cost.

I have had great luck this summer with washing my gelding's tail with the Cowboy Magic Rosewater Shampoo, rinsing out, then putting the Rosewater Conditioner in his tail for 10 min or so while I bathe him, and I rinse it out real good, put some Cowboy Magic detangler in, I don't comb it after, let it be and the next day it's soo soft! I use coconut oil in the winter time, then put his tail up in a Tail Boot. I usually get 1.5 in of growth per month.

Not to hijack the thread with hair care, but I suppose you could use it on your horse too....Redkins One United 25 Benefits is absolutely amazing for getting out the tangles and it's about $35 for a big ole bottle of it. You can't overuse it like you can with Its a 10. If I use too much Its a 10 it weighs my hair down and makes it feel nasty. But i've found the opposite with 25 Benefits.

I thought my gf was crazy for using Woolite on her horses but now I am using it on my horses too and I am addicted to it!! Not only does the mane and coat feel and look better, it has some ingredient in it that keeps the manes from getting tangled up [which mine seem to do constantly]. And I would think the Woolite is gentle on the horse since it is technically made for delicate clothing...Not that I bathe my horses with 'soap" often anyway. And as an added bonus, the Woolite really seems to get the white parts of my horses bright and white. Maybe I should try Woolite on my Poodle!! lol

Vetrolin products have PBA sunscreen in them. I've been using their shampoo and Shine Spray (detangler) lately. The Mane N Tail always makes their hair really soft too. I also have that Shampoo and spray detangler as well. Really like both of these.

Is the skin dry or the hair it self? I have used coconut oil too. Its good when the skin in a little dry at the base. Do you shampoo them often? That could be stripping the natural oils.

I have been having good luck with Cantu conditioner and shampoo. I'm not gonna lie, I pick up SheaMoisture masks for my horses and put a hair mask in from time to time as well. It really helps. I like a silicone free conditioner (and mask) followed up with Cowboy Magic. I feel like I need something to help "lock in" the moisture and Cowboy Magic does that because it is silicone based. The problem with silicone is that it creates a layer on the hair and won't let moisture in. So if you use a conditioner with silicone and then try to add in a leave-in product, the leave it can't do its job because it's just sitting on the silicone.

I use this stuff called Nu Stock when mine rub their tails. IT WORKS! I think its sulfur based and it says its actually supposed to help hair grow back. I'll put it on a time or 2 and they'll quit rubbing. I honestly think they rub from dirty, dry skin. Or ticks will do it too.

Healthy Hair moisturizer. LOVE IT! It comes concentrated so you just mix 1 part with 8 parts water, and spray it all over your horse, or wherever you want it. I don't use any other conditioner on them. Makes them super shiny and doesn't leave any residue.  I bought a big jug a couple years ago, and I've still got a good half jug left. It lasts a long time.
