I purchased a mare that had a pretty bad cut on the back side of her front foot in the past. The DDFT was severed and surgery repaired it. The scar goes into the coronet band and has caused a "quarter crack" on the outside of her front hoof. My vet, farrier and myself are trying to decide which options we have to try and get the crack out. I believe if we could remove the crack she would probably be sound. She is nice enough to try, but I don't want to make her more lame.
Right now I have a heartbar shoe on her and floated the portion of the hoof behind the crack and put epoxy on it. She is pretty comfortable now.
Has anybody had any experience or luck with this type of thing? Any advise to offer.

Had one that severed the DDFT , was not able to repair but did get the sheath repaired and scar tissue reconnected the tendon. He is a happy pasture guy for several years. His hoof has that crack also. We have tried multiple things and just when you think it is working , it comes back. Hope you have better luck than we did. We gave up and keep the crack part trimmed when it starts to flair away from the rest of the hoof. We tried various shoes, various epoxy fill in, casting tape, ours comes right at the scar that is on the cornet.

I had one that had a quarter crack from a scar on his front foot. When he was in the stall during the day, he had PHT over reach boots on. He was also on Farrier's Formula. When he passed away 9 months from buying him with Salmonella the top of the crack had grown down a 1/4". I can't say if it ever would've grown completely out, but I never thought it would grow out a 1/4" either.

Do you keep him barefoot at this point? I purchased this mare as a broodmare, but I can't help the need to at least try and fix it.

yes. He stays barefoot and we light ride him from time to time. I do try to put thrush treatment down in the crack occasionally just because I feel it can hold moisture and dirt.

I bought one a few years ago that had healed from this. He's completely sound, but his scar is pretty ugly. People always do a double take when they see it.
