Please refresh my memory....am I suppose to wait a little while after having hocks injected [or any injections] before I use Bute?? Seems to me I was told that once, or I dreamed it, lol--but, I have forgotten and I didn't think to clarify that with my vet. Thanks!

Ours are always given a mainline bute shot at the vets after the injections. Then we keep them on it for 4 more days.

We always give bute after injections. One at the vet before we leave and then a few days after.

My vet has me give a gram of bute the day before injections and for 3 days after for hocks. I can't remember if there was a different protocol for coffin joints, its been years since any of mine needed those.

On average, how long do you wait to run your horse again after they have been injected??

Vet here... I generally recommend 2g of Bute once daily for 3 days following joint injections. No forced exercise during that time but after 3 days can go back to normal work. Will see maximum benefit of injections at about 10-12 days.

My vet says No work day of injection, Walking only day after, light work day 3, back to full work ( Including a run if need be) day 4. Last time mine were done they were done tuesday and I gad a barrel race saturday. SHe was also a track vet and at the track they would get done after a morning work, off next day, full work by day 2.

I've gotten injections from 3 different vets, none mentioned anything about bute. One gets coffins, stifles, and hocks plus has to stand in the trailer for 9 hours that day traveling to get them. He can't have bute, so it wouldn't matter with him anyway. They all have different opinions about when to start working again though. I generally leave them off the next day and then the 2nd day I like to just go for a walking trail ride or something for about 30 minutes, just something light and relaxing for them. 3rd day I go back to the arena for light/moderate work, but don't pick on them about using their hind end or anything too much. After that it's fair game, I generally get mine in the spring when I'm just starting to leg up so I don't usually have any races for 3-4 weeks after injecting. I stop running end of october so I never need done twice a year as they spend november-march off as wild mustangs untouched by humans unless absolutely necessary lol

Another vet here..

I give 2gIV when I sedate for injections. I haven't told anyone to follow up with bute at home after. I may start implementing that!
