Location: Illinois | My 4 year old got her leg into the fence and scraped it up 2 days ago. Looks like cellulitis has set in and vet is coming out. Cold hosing & DiO didn't help the initial swelling the first night so I knew I better call the vet. There's heat and the swelling was mostly the hock up to stifle where it's all scraped up. She was sound day one, now she has a little tenderness but still is probably only a grade 1 on lameness. However don't dare try to touch that leg now and the swelling has extended down to the hoof even with bute added. I've never had to deal with this so does anyone have any suggestions? Vet gave me instructions until she can get out this afternoon, turnout in an area big enough to move around by herself, bute twice a day, and intermittent hand walking/cold hosing throughout the day. Adding the antibiotic is probably all they will do at this point for her & continue to do the rest.
For those who have dealt with it how long did it take to clear up and did the horse go back to full function. I can't replace her, so I'd like to do everything I can to make sure she'll be 100% for the future. |

Location: North Dakota | As long as you don't have joint involvement I'd think she'd make a full recovery:) I had a horse with cellulitis many years ago, treated it with some heavy duty, intravenous antibiotics for a week, and he was good as new. My sister's mare just got it about a month ago and she was back to riding and feeling great within a few days. |

Location: In a happy place | When this happened to my stud horse the vet kept him at the clinic for two weeks in a small stall with both back legs wrapped and on massive doses of antibiotics. |

Location: Illinois | Vet put a sweat wrap on the whole leg, but it only lasted 24 hours because it slipped. The swelling hadn’t gone above the hock or below the fetlock and it is nearly back that normal. I was told to put her back outside in her small lot & antibiotics daily until the supple she gave me is gone & cold hosing as many times a day as I can. The heat is gone and she doesn’t mind me touching it, so we were on top of it pretty quickly. She’s also sound. I was told to ride lightly, walk & slow trootng, for a week after being off for a week & then back to full work |
