My horse has arthritis in the right hock upper joint. He has been injected uppers and lowers, magnets, series of osphos for different reason but should have helped with this also. What do you do next? feet are balanced, barefoot. thanks! He is 11 years old.

We bought one just like this at 12. He is now 18 and we have tried everything. Our last resort last fall was alcohol injections to eat away the very last cartiledge and make it fuse, or hope it does. I don't know as we havent had x rays since, but he is still not great. I think he is better and he actually does better when ridden steady, better range of movement. But he's been a real mess and lives on Previcox.

If the main source of the pain is from the upper joint (not the middle or lower) there’s not a lot left to do. The upper joint is a high motion joint so every step he takes can be painful.

Alcohol/laser fusion is done in the middle and lower joint. It isn’t done in the upper joint.

ETA: a PHT hock not sure couldn’t hurt :-)

What do you mean by upper joint? Because I've heard people say "upper" and it wasn't.. like when we do joint injections people ask me if I do uppers and lowers, which to me I interpret as DIT and TMT. But technically, the highest joint in the hock is the tibiotarsal joint which is the high motion joint of the hock. If there is arthritis there, you are in a pickle. If you have arthritis in the DIT, which some people call the upper when referencing joint injections, there are more options. Do you have a picture of the X ray?

We xrayed. Great news! He actually is starting to fuse and has a spur on bottom joint area. I was told wrong by a different vet So we gonna recheck in 6 mths and then decide what we do rather we just continue to work him or do the drill something (can’t remember what he called it) to help speed it up. So we shall see. Thanks all!
