I believe it is mostly genetic, partly maintenance. Braids certainly do protect. Conditioners keep it strong. The horses I have had with long manes just had it naturally. I just took care of what they had.

Coconut oil will become your best friend. Mine will grow hair like crazy when I use it, but not when I don't. Genetics do play a big factor, if the horse doesn't have the genetic capability nothing you do will make much difference. Wash your mane really well, really scrub the roots to get the skin scurf off. Then saturate the ROOT while wet with coconut oil, virgin coconut oil. Usually a tablespoon or so will be plenty depending on thickness. Then lightly run your fingers through the mane to spread some of it down, but do not get it on the last 1.5-2" of mane. Braid in fairly small braids, I do every 1.5" of mane in a braid. The first two weaves should not be tight but after that start braiding tightly. This allows flexibility at the base for when they put their head down. Or you can feed them some hay on the ground and braid with their head down and do it all tightly. When you get the end wrap the braid in electrical tape, not a rubber band. The oil will eat the rubber band quickly, but doesn't harm the electrical tape and it doesn't pull hair out when removed like bands can. If you have a horse that rubs a lot you can wrap the entire braid, but otherwise it should stay nice. When I use the oil my braids will stay perfect for several weeks, sometimes up to a month. Every week i just dab a little more oil on the base and wash again each time the braids need redone. I can usually get between 1/2-1" of growth per month depending on the horse. My appaloosas mane is about 3 feet long right now, but he also has a lot of hair despite his breed. My black gelding will grow to around 2 feet and stop and my 4 year old will only get less than a foot long, she's got really thin hair and so does her bloodlines.

BioMan can also help, as well as about any supplement with biotin in it. I liked the BioMane and felt like the hair grew a little bit even when I wasn't doing the oil, but it set my farrier schedule from 7 weeks to 5 and it wasn't worth having to reset shoes that often. Coconut oil so far has been the most effective for me and my horses

Ditto to the coconut oil! It made my horses mane grow SO fast. I cant use it anymore as my yearling loves the taste of it and chewed some of my geldings mane out last winter. So be careful if your horse is turned out with others if you use it!

I don't use braids we have way too many trees and they rub and rip the whole thing out. I leave lose them and keep them tangle free. I use show cattle hair products on all my horses and they all have amazing long manes when I want to put in the effort.
I use either Sullivan's revive or weavers procharge.
There is nobody in the equine world who cares more about quality hair and healthy hair growth than show cattle folks lol.

I love them both and both work well, I think the revive a touch more but it can get really heavy and needs washed off from time time. The procharge is amazing too we use the concentrated and put into a spray bottle. Just use on the mane though unless its winter or you will be clipping your horse (Or so I here ;)...)

I don't do anything other than keep the tangles and misc. branches/hay/sticks she might find out of it.

This probably sounds silly but do you use coconut oil that is a hair product, or coconut oil in the jar that you can get at grocery store?

Exactly my gelding by Dtf is 110% natural it goes down past his shoulder ??. My fg has a fairly long thick mane so does my fab, other than that nobody really naturally grows long manes and we have over 20 head of horses. I guess you could feed some biotin
