Location: Arkansas | It looks like we might be taking a trip to Avon, SD end of Oct/first of Nov. It doesn't look like there is much around there (hubby will be pheasant hunting) but I though I would see if BHW had any suggestions. Our route will be from Arkansas up through Kansas City, Omaha, and Sioux City. Would love to do Mt. Rushmore and Wall Drug, but they are on the other side of the state. Looking for things no further than an hour out of the way.
Thanks! |

| Well...I could probably give you some ideas of things to do along the way (I live near Kansas City), but it looks like Avon might be in the middle of nowhere lol. There's a Cabela's about an hour north of Avon in Mitchell, SD.
The Black Hills area would be a pretty good drive from where you will be, but I would highly recommend the area if you get the chance! We went there in 2016 for 10 days to trail ride and sight-see and it has been one of my favorite places I've been. I didn't think Wall Drug was that great, but we hit that on our way home and I was kinda over the "touristy" spots by then.
What kinds of things do you like to do? |

Location: Too far from home | Being a life-long SD resident, I love this place. However, it's not your typical tourist destination. The primary sight-seeing opportunities are in the Black Hills. It's probably a 4-5 hour drive from Avon, but worth the trip. Mitchell is about an hour north of Avon. It has some shopping options (Cabellas etc) as well as the World's Only Corn Palace. It's touristy, but still unique and somthing to do. You'll be about 45 miles from Yankton. They have a lovely state park there on the river/lake as well as some antique shopping kind of places. Pickstown will be to your west about the same - 45 minutes. There is a Casino and a kind of cool history to the town. It was bustling in the late 40s-50s while the Fort Randall dam was built.
I hope that gives you a few places to start. PM me with any questions! |

Yes, very much middle-of-nowhere, lol.
I've never been to a Cabela's. I've been to a few different Bass Pro Shops. Would Cabela's be worth it, comparatively speaking?
It's not very far out of the way to go through Springfield, MO. We may go that way one route and stop at PFI.
We plan on doing the Black Hills one day, but unfortunately it won't be an option for this trip.
We like to rope, lol. I would be interested in any "must-see" western or tack stores, or local hole-in-the-wall type places to stop and eat along the way.
Thanks so much for your reply! |

If you are needing some new boots and end up going through Springfield, stay on 13 and stop at Kleinschmidt's outside of Kansas City. They don't have tack, but do have TONS of boots, clothing, home decor, etc. |

Thanks--I sure wish we could go to it, but we aren't going to have time to detour much on this trip :( |

| There is a great western store in Oacoma SD. Which is a couple of miles from Chamberlain SD. Chamberlain is about 2 hours from Avon. There is a lot of neat little shops and things to see in Chamberlain. There is an awesome statue at one of the rest areas overlooking the Missouri River gorgeous! Not much else close to Avon! Have fun and safe travels!!
ETA: The western store is called Rays Western wear.

The Corn Palace is always a fun time, they update the outside of it every year with a new design made out of corn. The Cabela's in Mitchell has horse pens, if you need to keep a horse overnight. |

Dang it--seems like all the good places are going to be too far away for me to check out. Guess I had better make sure my Kindle is loaded and Yeti cup is packed :) |

The Corn Palace did look pretty cool--we might make that. I wish this was a horse trip, but unfortunately it's not. That is good info to have for down the road though--thank you! |

Location: Texas | Is it far from Sioux Falls? We went last year. The falls are nice and they do have a minor leage baseball team. |

It's a 2-hour drive.....it seems like everything I would want to see is at least that far (except the Corn Palace). Thank you though! |
