Location: Sweet Home Alabama | Y’all have any tips for getting one to run all the way home? I’d rather not pump him full of supplements (he’s already kinda nervous in the alley). He’s only 7. He’ll run his heart out in a straight away at home when I ask, but he’s running in the 2d around here and he has such a pretty pattern but you can see him shutting down half way home. We hardly ever run to closed gates either. He’s on good grain, alfalfa, Dac oil, etc. I breeze him about once every 2 weeks at home. |

Location: Muskogee, OK | Would be good to rule out bleeding- to do this have him scoped soon after a run. Within hours is best, but you can usually still see some blood in the trachea 12-16 hours after. Your vet can also sample fluids from the airway to determine what kind of cells are present, and a certain kind of cell supports diagnosis of bleeding as well.
Only a small percentage of horses that bleed actually bleed from
the nostrils... what you are describing has me suspicious of such. Good luck! |

| I agree with seeing if they are a bleeder. Or have them check to see if the horses flap is closing. (Flap that closes to keep food from going into lungs when they swallow.) Someone help me with the technical term... |

Location: my piece of paradise | I agree check to make sure not bleeding or a flap issue. Also if you are hitting with an over and under coming out, some horses will quit running when you hit them.... |

| See if he’s bleeding or has another issue for sure.
Jackie J just talked about this in a podcast, running in an arena - especially if it’s an indoor, or covered, or just smaller, can be completely different from breezing on an outside straight away. Sometimes you need to get them in there and run them. Breeze them around the pen, safely and using your head of course.
Closed gates are also hard. My horse will quit running home as hard if all we do is rodeo around here because they are small closed gate pens. I try to get him to a jackpot at an arena that is run in/run out every so often through the summer to free him back up a bit. |
