| I would imagine its going to take some sales away from ulcerguard since the whole point of their patented " Carrier" is to get the paste through the stomach so it can be absorbed into the blood stream further back in the digestive tract. injection will make that process null and void. I would think it would be pretty popular except who wants to stick a horse with a needle every day for a month????? I would rather just use the paste. |

I remember this article last year, and am mostly interested in seeing what people think about injecting vs oral. Not really looking to use myself......just curious.

It's interesting. I wonder if major medical coverage would pay for that method of treatment like they do Gastrogard?

Location: South Georgia | I was just curious, so I asked my claims adjuster if the injection would be covered. She said they'd cover it just like they do Gastrogard as long as the horse was scoped and ulcers were found. Interesting. |

Considering a dose of the oral is 1 mark per day, 4 doses in a tube- at $28/tube, (even $30!) that would make it $56 for 8 doses (days).
$140 per week vs $56 per week doesn't sound real affordable to me?? That's way over twice as expensive! |

4 doses in a tube if you are using as a preventative. Treatment is labeled 1 full tube.
The $137.50 shot is for treatment. I have read it will treat faster than oral omeprazole, but no studies have said HOW fast.

Anyone know what happens when you stop the injections? Are you then supposed to go back to the preventative? |

But I'm confused; where do you get brand name Omeprazole for $28 tube? I can get compounded for $14/tube, but it most certainly doesn't compare to Gastroguard in terms of efficacy. Gastroguard &/or Ulcerguard are $40/tube here. And at a minimum 1/2 tube per dose for treatment, that's $140/week, about the same as the injectable.
I'm thinking the biggest benefit is faster results.

| I had a vet offer it to me for $50/dose for one week of treatment at a time. I was skeptical because he hadn't done many so I passed.
But for those of you looking for a cheaper ulcer solution: https://www.svpmeds.com - Their compounded omeprazole at rate of 2.28g/dose is $75. I've been using this with success for years. You just have to have your vet approve the order. |

Omeprazole works by getting into circulation and then inhibiting the proton pumps in the stomach which produce acid. Even when you give it orally, it has to be absorbed from the GIT into the bloodstream to then work on the stomach. It's not locally acting like if you give it orally it goes to the stomach and works.
We've been using IV omeprazole in house for years. But an IM formulation was promised to be available a year ago and I have yet to see it. It sounds good because you give it IM once a week. Based on the research done they claim only one horse had a vaccine reaction with localized swelling.
