Location: NC | I think my horse has an abscess. Is not wanting to put any weight on foot, but has no heat and doesn’t respond to me moving leg around. What should I soak foot in to try and bring abscess to surface?

| Ask your equine vet for a equine IV bag. They are wonderful for soaking feet. Just cut the top off, make your soak, pour in bag , tape bag to leg & no mess, no spill. Leave foot in soak for 20 minutes. I use Epson salt & betadine in warm water. When making it, when it looks like tea, you have enough betadine in it. After soaking, I dry & put a hoof paste " magic cushion is good" in the foot, put a diaper over the foot & wrap in vet wrap & then duct tape. I'm sure others will have great suggestions as well. |

| screw soaking LOL. I just wrap with a wet animalintex poultice pad. Wrap it up around the foot and up to the pastern so you get the cornet band. Then Vet wrap and then duck tape boot. Leave on for 24 hours then repeat until it pops. Soooo much easier then soaking and you can address pulling out the abscess all day instead of just a couple times a day when you actually sit there and soak. |

Location: Texas | I do what OKHorselover does and soak with an IV bag. Sometimes we will use CleanTrax but I really like Epsom salt and betadine with warm water. When I'm done soaking I wrap the foot in MagnaPaste, or whatever brand you can find of an Epsom salt poultice, its green, and change daily with soaking.
I like the animalintex poultice pads but holy crap those feet stink when they come off. I went on a farm call yesterday and they had been using the poultice pad and my hands stunk for the rest of the day. |

| I use epsom salt in a strong mix with water or use straight apple cider vinegar, which was suggested by my farrier. Honestly the apple cider vinegar did seem to work. I use a Davis soaking boot. |

Location: Hill Country of TEXAS!! | 3M poultice pad! They have them at tractor supply. Soak it, squeeze excess, then wrap with diaper, vet wrap and ducttape boot and your good to go.
Change daily. Super easy, clean and fast! This has pulled abscesses faster than soaking ever has for me.

Location: Where the pavement ends and the West begins Utah | there has been a sticky at the top of the page for this. itchthamol mixed with poultice and alum. pack hoof with this and wrap aprox 24 it will draw out an abcess. |

If you can find some Miracle Leg Paint use that. Nothing ever worked better at drawing out an absess than that stuff. It's extremely hard to find today but it's out there. |

Location: North Dakota | I soak in HOT water with epsom salt for at least 20 minutes, then wrap in my "homemade" poultice pad -- iodine mixed with sugar (AKA "sugardine!"), and then a diaper, and then duct tape.
Fortunately, I've only had ONE run-in with an abscess with my horses and I did this and it blew out the top in 5 days. Whether or not my soaking and homemade pad helped at all ... who knows. But it made me feel better for trying to do something for him.

Location: Illinois | I use Draw it Out liniment, because I have a lot of it. Also works great for bruised soles.
One of DiO Concentrate's many uses is it can be used as a hoof soak. First mix your DiO to the desired ratio. Soak the gauze thoroughly in the mixture until completely saturated. Affix the gauze to the hoof with the vet wrap then use the barrier boot to keep everything in place. Leave on for 30min-1hr and remove. This will help "draw out" all of the heat & soreness that are normally caused by abcesses. Though most people will leave on for short intervals, it is possible to leave DiO on for longer periods of time. This is especially true if the horse is penned or stalled.
If you don't have a boot simply duct tape it all together. Little bit easier than traditional soaking as you can leave them in a stall alone and do other things while you wait. |

I've used this numerous time for my abscess prone mare and this stuff works!! I was in a panic because she got one earlier this year and had to come here and find the recipe for it and it wasn't on the sticky thread SKM thankfully shared it with me again. |

This is the recipe for the one I have used a lot.
1 cup mud poultice (like Ice Tight)
1/3 cup Iccathamol
2 TBS Epsom salts
1 tsp Alum (Pickling spice) |

Location: Michigan | 1 cup Oxy Clean Powder (buy at kroger or family dollar, etc.)
1 cup Epsom Salts
Hot water as hot as you can stand it.
Soak for 30-45 minutes either once or twice a day.
It will slowly bubble all over the place and bleach whatever it touches. Not suppose to get it on the cornet band, but I do. It makes it soft.
Have blown 2 abcesses on 2 different horses in 2 years in less than 36 hours - start to finish. 1st horse blew in less than 24 hours.
Make sure to turn the horse out so they have to walk around. Stalling is not good.

Location: my piece of paradise | I mix Epsom salt, ichthamol and iodine into a paste. Pack the hoof and wrap. Leave on for 24 hours at a time. Usually pulls it out in 1-2 days. Has worked for me for over 20 years. I will also not stall one with an abcess, turn them out and let that blood flow and moving around help. |

I had a horse come up 3 legged lame one day. Put one of these pads on and the next day she blew out the back of her foot! It was a nasty abscess that made me wonder how the horse was not lame before. It drew out a large handful of really nasty puss. |

i'm puzzled with my situation and just curious if sometimes an abscess has taken longer than a day or two for some of you

i'm puzzled with my situation and just curious if sometimes an abscess has taken longer than a day or two for some of you
sorry to steal the post I think its time to take him to the vet, I had one also that I thought had a abscess, went on for over a week no inprovment and was really lame, had xray done, he had a slight rotation in his right foot come to find out he was IR{Insulin resistance} could not toterate sugar and starch and it almost caused him to founder, If I wanted any longer he would have been a mess. So now hes got to stay on a special diet..
