My new gelding has been diagnosed with  Laryngeal Hemiplegia and it has been recomended to get a tie back surgery done with him. We are in the process of getting this scheduled becuase he is a stage 4 out of 4.... so he is only able to acess 50% of his oxygen. I like everything else about him... Besides buying him site unseen with this issue... (thats for another day ;) His quality of life truly depends on this surgery being successful.  I know it comes with risks, but Id like to know who has had this surgery completed successfully and some positive stories...

Also, What did you pay Im being quoted around 3200... ugh

My good horse had tie back surgery this summer. She never showed much for typical symptoms, other than starting to have major issues with anxiety before and during a run. Since the surgery she has been like a different horse. She now walks on a loose rein, where she never used to (she’s a hot horse). When she runs she just feels focused, she’s actually looking for the barrels and waiting for me now. She is running as good or better than ever since the surgery. Would definitely recommend based on the results I had. I’ve also spoken with a lot of people and know several that have had huge success. My vet told me (he couldn’t say names) but there are several top pro horses around me that have had it done.

Edited to add we paid about $3,000. That included lasering a vocal cord and all the sedation and couple nights stay at the vet clinic.

That’s a very high quote for tie back surgery. You might get a quote from another clinic that works on more race track horses.
You might also ask about laser trimming the vocal cords at the same time. Sometimes trimming the vocal cords can help expand the available airway too.

Thank you all for the feedback. I am still waiting on a couple more quotes, but want someone who has lots of experience doing this kind of surgery.

That is really high!  We had one done a few years aga and it was only $900! I don't know where you are, but I would check around for a better price.

I was thinking that was SUPER high too! A friend of mine just had that surgery performed in Nebraska and it was $900!
