| I am purchasing a horse out of state and want to get him fully vet checked before i buy. what is the proper procedure ?? |

IO | I'm not sure about "proper" ,but alot of people will ask on this board what vet they recommend ,give general location of horse,and I'm sure you will get some info.Also figure out what you want to have done at vet check,(rads,of what?spine,hocks,etc,blood work)let owner know what vet you want and schedule the appt.If vet can't get to horse,make arrangements,and figure out a fair price to pay owner to transport horse to vet.

| Twice we have left a check with the seller for the agreed price per vet check and hauled the horse to our vet, neither horse had any major issues and we still own them today. This was several years ago, I doubt anyone wouid agree to that today, both were a good chunk of change - 30K. Another time we arranged a local vet to do the prepurchase and had them send xrays and written report to my vet.

We do the same. Have them vetted locally and then have them send the results to our vet for review. It's nice to get the opinion of a vet that you know and trust. |

Location: North Dakota | I purchased my current horse in Manitoba, Canada. I've used a vet there before for a different horse and felt comfortable with him doing my pre-purchase exam. The owner hauled the horse to the vet for me, but I met her there for the exam. I had his feet and stifles x-rayed, soft tissues ultrasounded, already had current set of hock x-rays, and I pulled a chem panel to make sure she didn't drug him with NSAIDS, etc. I paid for the pre-purchase exam and then had that vet clinic send my local vet all the rads and results.

Location: Gainesville, TX | Yup, what everyone else said. Get some recommendation on vets close to the horse owner. Have the horse owner haul the horse there (pay the owner for their gas too), pay the vet to do a check and send all the results and notes to your personal vet. Then make your final decision. Pretty straight forward.
ETA: I don't believe in a pass/fail vet check. When it comes down to making a decision, I believe "what I am willing to live with/maintain" and "what I am not willing to live with/maintain." They ALL have something up.
