Sweet feed doesn't have a whole lot of fat to it, but it does have a lot of sugars. Senior feed is formulated with some forage built in usually.
There is a difference in senior feeds as well. We used to feed Nutrena Sr. My old gelding wasn't holding weight well, so I switched to Purina Sr. Active because it has a high fat content. Regular Purina Sr has less fat for horses who are easy keepers. My old man is 24 and he looks great.
I wouldn't feed him just sweet feed because there's not a whole lot to it. Pellets are going to be easier for an older horse to chew if they have bad teeth, because they can be softened with water if necessary.

I always prefer TEXTURED not Pelleted. FOr horses that are aging and may have dental issues, much easier for them to chew and digest. Less incidence of choke. Triple Crown senior is about as good of feed as you can get in my opinion.

I second Triple Crown Senior. My 23 and 30 year old look and feel great. I do add a little max e glo pellet in the winter and they get soaked alfalfa cubes with each feeding. As far as chewing and digestion they do well.

Thank yall for yalls opinion! I was mostly just being curious. I firmly believe my older horse getting a Sr. feed. I was just listening to other people and a few say "if they have hay and a good feed then Sr. feed is a waste of extra money" ..... I am feeding a different Sr. feed iv never feed. It's been several years since I've had to put one on sr. feed so I started him on the same sr. feed as the feed I feed my others. I live in an area we don't have a huge verity but iv been very very please with the BIG V brand so I'm sure the Sr. feed will not disappoint.
Big V makes both a regular and a high fat senior feed under the Heritage brand. I fed the regular until they came out with the high fat which I am now using. These are literally the only senior feeds on the market that my 36 year old will eat. I am extremely happy with the high fat version.
