Location: North of where I want to be | Once again work has me looking to relocate.
This time to the Sunshine State.
My potential coverage area: Gainesville to Lakeland.
SO I am looking for some insight on areas to live(or look at living) That are semi rural, reasonable proximity to highways, and not sky high prices. Any suggestions?
Schools aren't an issue as both kids are grown. Would like to be in an area with some horse activities. I am leaning toward staying further North, but that could change.

Location: South Georgia | You wont have to worry about horse activities. Gainesville is located quite close to Ocala, which is the horse capital of the world. You will find sprawling tracts of land and you wont be able to drive anywhere without passing horse farms. Lakeland less so, but definitely toward Gainesville. Likewise, horse events all over, including barrel racing. It's a nice area. I'm about 2 hours from Gainesville. Also, in Ocala you have the best vets! I have to haul down to Equine Medical Center of Ocala from time to time. For a horse person, you'll enjoy the area,......once you acclimate to humidity and heat.

Location: In The Land of Cotton | North outside of Gainesville. You can find any type of horse activities that you want. I know they have weekly jackpots etc. And, if you want to go into the city Gainesville has lots of shopping and good food.
Lakeland is just more congested. |

From north of Lakeland to about Leesburg, you'll have to be careful for low-lying land. That's the Green Swamp and they really mean it. It drains well but there will be standing water if it rains good. Just north of Lakeland is Polk City, Groveland, Zephyrhills, Dade City where you might be able to find some property but prices are rising especially in Zephyrhills. Clermont is all suburbs now but you might be able to find something in Groveland, Mascotte, Webster, Bushnell, Floral City. Lots of barrel races every weekend.
Leesburg north to Gainesville is better I think. Higher ground and, like the previous poster, something is running in Ocala/Williston/Trenton/Lake City every weekend and some weekdays. I like the area west of Gainesville/Ocala myself - Trenton, Chiefland, Bronson, Newberry, Williston, Morriston, Dunnellon. Decent size towns so you don't have to drive to Ocala for everything, easy access to I-75 and should be able to find a decent piece of property.
Once you get into the Crystal River/Inverness/Homosassa region, it might get more expensive. I don't know for sure since I haven't shopped for real estate in a coon's age but a lot of retirees and suburbs are being built there. It's growing really quickly.

Location: North of where I want to be | That higher ground thing is a BIG deal for this PA transplant. We have seen enough flooding and standing water and that is one thing I am definitely worried about.

Location: Feeding mosquitos, FL | Anytime! I love living in Florida. Grew up around Tampa and moved to Tallahassee ten years ago. World class horses of every stripe, barrel races and rodeos all the time (though they do shut down in the height of the summer), great people. Large chunks of the state that are still rural but if you want to get fancy and go to a great big city, you can do that too. And nothing beats a Gulf beach. I defy anyone who says otherwise.
