Mr Whit purchased me a round bale feeder for christmas! i get all the greatest presents, but i digress....
We were looking at purchasing a slow feed hay net to put on the big rounds in the feeder. These would sit outside and weather. He is afraid that the horses will leave the last 1/4 of hay in the net (weed and just generally unacceptable morsels for the uppity critters). Hes afraid that he wont be able to easly empty the nets out to insert new bales.
Does anyone have any input on keeping outside unprotected haybales in slow feed nets? Thanks Lulu

I would just use a round bale feeder that is made for horses & forget the net. I hate nets. I won't go into the whole story, but I lost a beautiful, wonderful colt to a broken leg from a hay net. I will never get over that death.

I use Hay Chix with on ground hay feeders and I also have above ground hay feeders I have no problem with either feeder dumping out the last bit for them to pick through and refilling them by myself. I use the 6' feeder and I prefer the large hole hay nets.

We use hay nets and it saves us a ton of hay and if you get good hay the horses will clean it up completely. I would always put them in a feeder for fear that horses will get their hoof caught in them. My sister just had this happen with one of her mares and luckily my niece came home from school at lunch or they might not have her anymore. We have a feeder with a roof over the top that we use and it works great. No wet or moldy hay. My husband built it. My husband puts the nets on by himself and never comes in the house swearing...lol...so it must go okay.

oh i dont feel bad at all. i knew this man was the one for me our first christmas together.... he bought me heated water buckets and it was the best present ever. Since then i have scored a generator for my trailer and a manure spreader for valentines day one year.

I like how it will keep the bale off the ground so it wont draw moisture up into it.. I'm not a flowers/jewelry person I like things I can use, like what you got, I like getting tack or anything I can use outside, my last thing my husband got was a pole tree trimmer that runs on a battery, its so awesome..
