| In this sport in order to grow it and keep it alive it is important to help the new comers.. right?
As we know though some people new to the horse industry can become like quick sand. You want to help them and then suddenly you are exausting all of your energy trying to educate them.
EXAMPLE: I just had someone message our training page and I quote: "I have an 8 month old stud colt. He is triple registered cutting and barrel horse. Is there anyone you suggest for cold starting? We are new to having horses so if possible I would also like to talk to someone who could give me advice on if it would be worth it to breed him. On your facebook I saw you posted horses for sale so I wasnt sure if you also bred roping horses. Just thought it wouldnt hurt to ask."
YALL. In these situations do you even try to educate these people or just go the other way. They'll probably become upset with you because the truth will hurt.... |

| With something like that I would try to head them in the direction of someone who gives lessons and enjoys working with beginners like that. Yikes.

| Yikes. I wish there was a Horse Ownership for Dummies manual in times like these. The colt is probably a rescue or dirt cheap and the new owners are going to "Learn together" and I'm surprised that term wasn't stated as well in the message.
I guess in that situation, I would message back that they need to wait until the horse is past it's actual 2nd birthday (give the poor thing a fighting chance) to send to a colt starter. Then also recommend some lessons with that trainer on good broke horses for several months before they ever touch the colt.
Not sure what to say on the stallion issue...maybe don't touch that one and let it go. I'm guessing the trainer would mention gelding, hopefully! Otherwise, very gently tell them that breeding involves lots of money (SPENT) and time promoting, and no one will breed to something that doesn't have a 1D or performance record. Lie a little...it'll be in their best interest! |

| I messaged her  . I told her that normally it is NOT profitable to breed a stud who had not won at the highest level. Also gave her the name of a colt starter we knew and told her they dont take them until they are two years old at least. I told her to send me a photo of the papers and I could tell her a little about his pedigree. Hopefully clear up this triple registered nonsense. |

| Years ago, I had a man walk up to me at a little show my then 9 year old daughter was showing at. His daughter had gotten excused from the arena and he didn’t understand why. He decided I was someone that looked like I knew what I was doing so he decided to ask. That started a friendship between both of our kids and our families. That was 16 years ago.
Green isn’t bad if the person has a desire to listen and learn. It takes courage to reach out to a complete stranger and ask for help. It’s the ones that don’t want help that are like quicksand. |

A couple years ago, I was looking at the horse stuff in Tractor Supply and a guy with children was debating on which random pieces of tack he could finnagle into a cinch for his 12 hand horse that he just got and trained himself. In lieu of buying an actual cinch that he deemed too expensive, he was going to buy a latigo strap and use a bag of little leather scraps to attach the cinch on both sides of the horses belly. I tried to help him but he was not listening to anything but his own crazy ideas. You cant just use random materials!!!!!!! |

| Update two: Lady is very nice, also has a 14 year old paint for her 9yo daughter that seems like a great fit. Has her in riding lessons with some good folks. Says she now intends to geld the colt after our conversation (I reminded her of the extra precautions in keeping a stallion and how they can be tempermental). She said that made up her mind because safety for her family is her priority. We have talked more and may see each other at a playday for our kids soon. Looks like we have a good one here peeps.

Ditto! That was the part that made me want to run for the hills. I am glad I didn't. She sent me a pic of the pedigree/papers and I was just like "ok so what you have here is a registered paint horse with some cutting bloodlines". It sounds like she wants to learn but has had people who don't actually know squat trying to "teach" her. |

| Being triple registered is not in common. I have several that are registered in more than one registry. One is a world champion in two registries, one being an AQHA world champion. Not at all uncommon to APHA, AQHA. Will’s horse—A DASH OF COLOR, I believe, is a very nice horse registered AQHA/APHA. CHASIN FIREWATER was registered in more than one registry

 Thanks for the kind words Chandlers Mom. I grew up involved with horses but it wasnt until later in life where I was exposed to some really great horsemen and learned that I didnt know near as much as I thought I did. I am thankful for all of those that have helped me expand my knowledge and skills. This board has also brought me great deal of insight. |

This ^^ We've always tried to go out of our way to help the kids out. You get some that don't want to break a fingernail, lay their phone down long enough to listen or think one trip trotting around the arena is enough for one day. Then there was the one that kept running to the house to get a soda out of the fridge every 10 minutes. The ones that really want to listen and learn from a couple ofold farts don't come along very often. In this day and age Google and You Tube can be a beginners best friend if they really want to learn about pedigrees and training. |

Thank you!! Yes ma’am he does. Growing up he didn’t come from a family that could afford finished horses so he always made his own. Ended up winning the National High School Finals on a mare he trained in 2002. It was just what he loved and he’s done that for a living ever since. :) |

Location: LA Lower Alabama | As someone who lived far from a good farrier I reached out years ago to a BoardBuddy farrier in the hopes that she would be willing to offer some help on my trim job. I just wanted to be sure I wasn't harming my horse with the way I was doing it while admitting I knew just the basics. She was less than willing and I do believe she was spooked by the "newbie" quick sand issue. Thankfully I found someone who was willing to give me a chance until I was able to find a farrier. Turns out I aint half bad and I made a really good friend in the process. |
