My gelding has issues with getting shots in his hind end muscles. Doesn’t mind the needle, but goes nuts when you go to put the syringe on to push the meds. He has zero problem with giving it in his neck muscles or any IV shots. Cool with all of them. Didn’t know if anyone had a trick. I sure would rather use the hind quarter if I can. I have never in all my years given IM shots in the pecs either. I can’t imagine he would like that much. Thanks !

Are you being super careful when attaching the syringe back on to the needle? I know some horses can’t stand the needle being bumped around. Do you have someone who can distract him with food while you do the injection?
Giving shots in the pecs isnt bad at all. Good luck!

Absolutely careful and yea you can tell if the needle moves he doesn’t like it. You stick needle in and he just waits. As soon as you approach it with syringe he starts whipping around and of course the needle moves so reinforces it. I have had someone hold him, that doesn’t help. I guess I could do it when he is loaded in trailer but we will see. I could also give him some ace to , but hate to do that just for an IM injection.

I’ve never given an IM injection in the hindquarters. Why not the neck? Is there a benefit?
I prefer the hind quarter “ in case” you ever have a reaction or soreness it’s a lot easier on the horse of the pain is in the rear end vs the neck. Lol. Just my preference.

Maybe have someone twitch him while you do it? We had a broodmare that would strikeout and try to paw you when getting shots and twitching her kept everyone safe.

Yea twitch would work I bet. He is such a nice and kind horse I was hoping for a little less painful trick but that is a good idea!
