Location: CA | In the process of trying to buy a new to me used car. Looking at cars under 100000 miles and wanting to get over 35 mpg. I am completely against hybrids so has to be a gas or diesel. I have narrowed down my search to a chevy cruze or a Hyundai elantra. I am totally open to other options as well if anyone has one. Mostly just want to make sure I am getting something reliable that gets good milege! Thanks! |

Location: Northwest | I have a 2017 VW Jetta S. It is a manual and a gasoline engine. I always get 40-52 mpg on the highway and around 38-40 when I am just driving around town. The area I live is fairly hilly, not flat. I LOVE THIS CAR! It is pretty basic other than it has heated seats but the fuel mileage is just fantastic. |

Location: North Central Iowa Land of white frozen grass | That is a pretty broad statement about Honda or Toyota. I see that they have service bays at their dealerships just like the other brands to fix things on their cars. Most problems with cars are caused by the person that is driving them. |

Agree. Anything Toyota will last and will be low maintenance. I can't stand to have my vehicles in the shop and I recommend Toyota 100% of the time. |

Of course they have service bays, no car is immune from issues, lol.
Just saying overall (yes, making a very broad statement) that Honda and Toyota do a better job at manufacturing vehicles that will last. Not saying there aren't individual vehicles out there from other makers that are still going strong after several hundred thousand miles, it's just that Honda and Toyota overall are better. That's not just my opinion, if you do a quick Google search, you'll see article after article that confirms that.

this^^^ I'd personally go with the Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic. I even prefer Hondas over Toyotas. We are on our second CR-V, and while it doesn't get 35mpg it does get us about 30 and it has all wheel drive, which is necessary for those wintery 30+ mile commutes. They are built to last. |

Location: So Cal | I've always had at least a 50 mile/day commute and I've always driven a Camry. I sold my old one at 240k miles (it still ran) and my current one has 130k-ish and no issues whatsoever. It's big enough that it's comfortable to ride in, has a lot of trunk space (can fit a lot of pellets, shavings, etc. - lol), but still gets good gas mileage (I sit in traffic a lot and average 30mpg). When I'm ready to upgrade, it'll just be to a newer version of the Camry. (current one is a 2013) |

Location: Montana | Of your choices, most of them are pretty good. What I will say is DO NOT GO WITH A HYBRID whatever you do. They cost more initially and if the running battery every goes, they are expensive to replace and hard to find anyone who will make the repair. We have one currently (a Honda) with that issue....not fun. |

I have a Honda CR-V that gets 25 mpg on my 30 mile each way daily commute even when I let it run to warm up about 5 minutes before I leave in the mornings. It has a surprising amount of zip when I get after it and the mileage is pretty good for a small SUV that can still haul 500 pounds of grain easily. |

Location: Missouri | I know it's not an American car, but my mom has driven a Toyota since I was 4 years old simply bc they hold up so well to her insane commutes. She had a Camry first for 12 years before giving it to me as my first car. I got something a little newer when I turned 18, but at the time that 14 yr old Camry had 270k miles and was still running great.
She's driven the same Corolla for 14 years.....close to 300k miles. It's in terrible shape on the outside but the thing still has a few yrs left. |

Location: Dearing, GA | I drive for a living (I cover 30 counties in East Georgia for work), and I drive a 2017 Toyota Corolla. It had 8 miles on it when I bought it, and it currently has 54,000- THATS how much I drive. It is the best car ever! I average 36 miles to the gallon, and thats an even mix of highway and city; but have gotten up to 40+ on long highway trips. I get oil changes every 5,000-7,000 miles, and put new tires on at 50,000 as more of a safety precaution than out of necessity. I could not recommend this car more. |

Location: Adopt a homeless pet - www.petfinder.com! | I have a 2015 Chevy Cruze that I love! I commute 60 miles a day in it. It's very comfortable, has get up and go, and if I keep my lead foot under control it gets about 30 miles a gallon. I was sad when I heard they weren't going to make them anymore.

Location: Too far from home | I am what they call a "super communter". 5k a month easy. The last 2 cars I had were Subarus and I would highly recommend them. I first had an Outback which I traded in at 184k for a Crosstrek. The Crosstrek got around 32-33 mpg until I hit a deer and totalled it. I truly am not completely sure I would have crawled out of that bad boy if it hadn't been a Subaru. They have a very strong brand following. When buying a new car, I did a little research as I wanted something a little bigger and higher up than the Crosstrek (though I have nothing bad to say about that car) and went with a Buick Encore which I LOVE LOVE LOVE. Not as great a gas mileage (26 ish right now) but I have forgotten to turn it off - that new push button thing threw me off - and often leave it running because Spike, the love of my life, is getting old and needs the heater on. Sorry to be so wordy!

Does that apply to everything you purchase, or just vehicles? Are all of your clothes, electronics, etc only made in America? |

| I am surprised you like your Cruze's. I think theyre not making them due to the problems they had. I had a 2013 I think it was and it spent more time in the shop than my driveway. It had hundred of recalls on top of issues in general. My heat didn't work half the time, smelled like anti-freeze. It was bad. As soon as I got it paid off enough, I traded it for a Dodge Dart which I do really like.
I only tell you my Cruze experience so you don't buy an "older" model, maybe the newer ones are better. |

Location: Fairfield, IA | I'm not saying its the best (ask 10 people you'll get 10 answers on whats the best), but I have a 2011 Chevy Cruze LTZ as my commuter car; I put approximately 130 miles/day on it.
I've had a few small issues, biggest one was the water pump was leaking but that was covered under an extended warranty.
I get about 33 mpg during the summer, winter isn't as good.
It gets around good in the snow, but I have dedicated Bridgestone Blizzak winter tires on it right now.
Drawbacks to it are
1. Lack of power- it has no get-up and go from a dead stop
2. small back seat-not an issue for me as I rarely have passengers
My wife has a 2011 Kia Optima, it is a decent car. However it just got a new re-manufactured long-block due to the engine blowing up (common problem with Kia's with that engine) It was covered by a recall as well, didn't cost anything to get it fixed and we were provided a rental car as well.

Buy American made whatever it is.
In years past the Toyota Camry has been the most "American made" car- most parts made here...….currently Jeep Cherokee is #1 with three Hondas also being in the top ten. American made has more to do with the parts in the car not necessarily where the car originates from. Jeep is now part of Fiat-Chrysler but is 72% American parts. |
