| I have a horse with not so great feet and we are going to be away from home for a few days at a race with lots of concrete. My vet suggested putting him on gapabentin while we are away. Has anyone ran a horse on this drug before? I’m not too sure about it and a barrel horse. I’m reading that it is like a sedative? Thanks for input |

| It is prescribed to humans for nerve pain. I have heard it can make people drowsy so they often take ot at night. I have not hear about use and results with horses. I would be interested to read others comments. |

Location: Arkansas | I took it for nerve damage in my leg, and it made me sleepy. Sean took it for his back, and it did not make him sleepy. Never heard of its use in horses tho. Interested to hear what others have to say. |

Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | I used to take it 3x a day. It made me feel awful. Not sure how it would affect a horse but I’d never take it my self agin. |

| My husband was on it for a short time when he hurt his back. He felt terrible, then started having anxiety attachs, heart palpatations, and other weird stuff so he stopped taking it. The one time it scared me he was in bad shape. |

Location: Got Lobsta? | I too took it 3x daily for my MS. I didn't notice being sleepy but than again I'm always tired! However it did take away the nerve pain. It didn't work right away, for me I had to have it built up in my system. I never heard of it used on horses, but I have on dogs though. |

Location: Mountains of VA | Originally used in humans for seizures, now used for nerve pain/inflamation. My husband is taking it at night only and it is helping him rest/sleep. Guess it would be o.k. to give to horses at their night/afternoon feeding or after competing at night??? |

Location: California | I have a pet Nubian goat who has arthritis. He was laying down a lot and not wanting to move around. Since he is a pet, we wanted to help him if we could. His vet prescribed gabapentin and meloxicam daily so he has been on it for just over a year. The only changes in his behavior have been positive. He is much more active and appears pain free. I don't know if it affects animals different than humans, but I just thought I'd throw in my experience. Good luck! |

| My doctor suggested that I take Gabapentin to relieve my hot flashes. Not sure that I was to take it after reading some of the posts. And i sure wouldn't run a horse on it.

Location: North Dakota | My 14 year old springer spaniel is on it for pain management due to a fibrosarcoma tumor in his leg. It definatly made him sleepy to start. He has been on it for 6 months. It does a good job of keeping him comofortable and enjoying life.

Might try having your horse wear soft ride boots all the time until you are ready to run. |

Agreed. That's what I do with mine who was diagnosed via MRI with bone edema. soft rides, keep feet packed with sole packing of your choice when stalling overnight. NSAIDs if going to be a 2-3 day show... I don't think my knee jerk reaction would be gabapentin? what do you think? |
