| Anyone on here that has high cholesterol? What kind of prescription drug are you taking? Do you follow any kind of diet that works for you? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am 68 years old and "never" been on any kind of prescription drug ever. Outside of an antibotic for infection now and then. Also low on vitamin D which I have no problem with taking that. But it also surprises me as I have always taken an over the counter vit d but guess I need more and I have been leery of those over the counter vit d anyway. |

I don't have High cholestrol per se, mine usually comes in right at 190-210 and I think 199 is the highest of the " Normal range" . My doctor gave me a very small dose of Lovastatin. |

| Both my husband and dad take atorvastatin. It says on the label not to eat or drink grapefruit. Both of them didn’t see that. It made them gain a lot of weight.
As for diet, we don’t eat prepared foods. I cook very healthy. That helps. |

| Atorvastatin is what the doctor prescribed for me. I am just freaking out because of the side effects but also because of what could happen if I don't take it. |

My husband is 54 and anti meds. My dad is 84. Both have had no issues with it. Other than the weight gain for not reading the label. They literally stopped as soon as they stopped eating grapefruit and drinking the juice. |

| Thanks. I know a lot of people are on it. Just this is first time I have ever been on prescription meds. I know I am going to have to totally revamp my diet. I have kind of not been watching it as closely as I guess I should have. I have been studying the Pritikin Program. |

Location: Slipping down the slope of old age. Boo hoo. | Mine starting creeping up as I got older. Changed my diet and that helped tremendously -- so far I have avoided the need for a medication. Per my doctor, diet is major. Doctor steered me toward the Mediterranean Diet. Salads. Lots of fish. Nothing fried. Veggies.

This is the first medication my husband has ever been on. My dad isn’t on many and never has been.
I have the opposite problem. My cholesterol tends to be too low. Unfortunately when the bad is too low, that means the good it too low too. |

| Thanks for the replies. I am hoping to get this drastically reduced. Doctor said I would probably be on the med for the rest of my life but I am determined to not be. The Vit D yes. |

| Without meds, you can have a stroke or heart attack. I made the comment to the Dr once that I would hate to have a stroke and die. He said or worse— not die. I have been through every statin drug and they made my chest hurt so bad that I almost had to go to the ER. I take Zetia which works differently. It kind of sacks up the chlolesterol and you poop it out. Doc said he never had anyone with side effects. I also take over the counter niacin to help. Have been on these for at least 12 years.
As far as diet goes, avoid animal fats. If you are going to eat red meat, eat smaller portions. For meat, fish and chicken are good choices. I will never give up bacon so I eat a couple of pieces instead of six. I eat a lot of vegetables. There are very few vegetable fats that are high in cholesterol. Some people are just predisposed to have high cholesterol no matter what they eat. I am one of those. That is caused by a metabolism problem |

Location: Where I need to be | I had high cholesterol for years always over 200, usually 275 or better. I cleaned up my diet, which helped, but it was still over. I started taking Modified Citrus Pectin and 2 months later my cholesterol dropped 55 points. This is an all natural product I purchased from Amazon. May not work for everyone, but it did for me. |

Location: Somewhere between S@% stirrer and Saint | All the Gordons in the family die of clogged arteries. I started doing triathlons 12 years ago and had cholesterol checked at being of the season. At the end of the season it was higher just leaving OK range, Go figure. I started taking a 1/2 pill 20mg. per day. Ever since then choloesterol has been good with simvistatin. There is another kind that controls cholesterol that has a side effect of pancreas cancer. My dad just dieda few months ago and he had the pancreas cancer. Our bodies make more bad cholesterol that we usually consume in a diet!!!!! Genetics is the killer!!! It will help by reducing bad cholesterol diets but not by much so the simivistatin pill will work better than the diet. My picture to the left I was in good shape racing but genetics needed some help with simivistatin. Vitamin C and Niacin help increase GOOD Cholesterol!!
I will let everyone know at the end of February 28th on my birthday if cholesterol has changed!

Location: Texas | I have high cholesterol. I've been on Pravastatin for years. My cholesterol is still high. Probably the only thing that has been good is that the good cholesterol # is high. I got fed up with it still being high overall & just quit taking meds about a month ago. Not sure what my plan is, but it seems stupid to keep taking a medicine that doesn't seem to help. Doctor apparently doesn't think we need to try new meds. Both of my parents are clogged up with heart disease. |

| cholesterol is very much genetics.. the males in my moms family all have heart disease and the women dont... anyways, my moms was high then she went keto and it has been reduced to normal levels... i was also listening to dr drew on his podcast and he said a way to trick a cholesterol test is to eat a bunch of fat before you take it. lol |

Location: in the ozone | With all the more recent research, I told my doctor I won't take any of the Statin drugs. I am being careful on diet and taking Fish Oil and Flax Oil and those have helped too. |

I have been through all of the statin drugs and just can't take them even Lipitor. Zetia has few side effects and I have taken that for about 10 years now. I had a dr. that was on top of things and he started me on Niacin about 8 years ago. I do take Vit C because I have room full of disease carriers at school and take it in self defense. Ha.
Mine is a genetic metabolism problem.

It is the 500mg-flush free. I get the niacin at Walmart--probably not the best choice--maybe Spring Valley or Spring something. it will make you think you are melting from the inside at first. Just a warning. |

| Had a follow-up check up with my pulmonary doctor yesterday. It has been 6 months since I quit smoking. YAY Anyway I told him about having high cholesterol and he suggested I go Vegan. He is and grows his own vegetables and etc. He is a certified nutrionist also. He says I could improve my cholesterol numbers drastically by going this way. Is any one a Vegan? |

I would find a new doctor that isnt pushing his agenda.
EAT-bacon, eggs, steak, fish, vegetables, cheese, milk...
DONT EAT- bread, tortillas, chips, pasta... |

| Im not a doctor or pretend to know a ton about this, but I do know Americans are fat and out of shape for some reason and I believe that reason is the BS food "pyramid" we were all forced to follow and believe in as kids. That thing is basically upside down.
I havent watched all of this particular video but I do believe its ore accurate than a lot of things being spewed by certain doctors.
Anyways, watch the video and more like it with an open mind and maybe you will have some better questions to ask your DR and maybe you can find another one that doesnt just want to pump you full of different medications.

| Oh I agree that we are a fat nation and all that. My pulmonary doctor does not believe in all the high cholesterol medications. What he said was that I could change my numbers by going to a vegan diet or at least a clean diet and I agree with him on that case. It was my other doctor (PCP) that prescribed me the Atorvastatin drug which I am reluctant to take because of the side effects. |
