Location: Bastrop, Texas | I like listening to music sometimes while riding, especially if I’m just doing conditioning work like long trotting in a safe area, and I plan to be riding a few horses for like 2-4 hours. I’m talking about pretty repetitive, monotonous things. I listen to Pandora with ear plugs.
It doesn’t seem to effect my horses or my riding, but my wife thinks it’s a bad idea. I’m not talking about riding along a road or in the ditch. I’m talking about walking, trotting, loping around a groomed trail in a 20 acre pasture. It doesn’t seem to effect the horses any.
Thoughts? Does anyone else do this? |

I do as well, and I enjoy it. Sometimes I’ll base my workout off of which station or songs I’m listening too. Much like when I workout or run. More fast pace songs, I’ll do more loping or may sprint a few hundred yards or so and more slow paced songs, I’ll leisurely walk, trot, and just relax. I enjoy the mix up and it keeps me from getting bored. I don’t often listed to music because my kids are in the car and I’d much rather be talking to them or on the phone with my husband. So I do appreciate getting to listen to Pandora when riding horses. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Not a good ideal I think, I want to always be aware of my surroundings at all time, I have dogs and rattlesnakes in my area and want to hear any signs if any dogs are trying to sneak up on me and want to beable to hear that snake, I have rode a many times and come across a rattlesnake. And people love to shoot their guns so thats another reason to want to be aware of whats going on around me.. And always got my thoughts working on over load while riding  .. And I'm such a nature lover I love to hear whats out there, so many different sounds out here, lol..

Yes in a control area to me would be fine listening to music and yes arenas have music playing most of the time, but out in the open on a track, pasture, trail not so good..I want to be aware at all times.. When I lived in McAllen I had to really be on high alert and pay attention, I had a round track in my pasture to long trot my horses but you never knew what you would come across coming out of the brush, as in coyotes, illegals, or some as*hole wanting to scare your horse by shooting at your dogs that were running along side you while riding, coming from the Valley I'm always alert.. Arena riding would be just fine, outside the arena not so fine.. |

Location: Montana | Personally, I love to listen to music or podcasts while I'm riding horses. It helps me focus and concentrate, as I'm not listening to the "outside world" or distractions. I even do this when I ride my colt, which probably isn't the best idea, but with music I can better pay attention to what I'm doing. It also relaxes me (and if its a good beat, gets me pumped too!) to the point that I'm not nit-picking (which I'm bad at). But it seriously helps me focus and I actually have a better ride than if I wasn't listening to music, and my horses I think like it better that way too. I see nothing wrong with it. Pandora is my go to, too! |

| I listen to music every day when I ride. It helps me time warm ups and cool downs, and I can try to set a pace to a song to keep things fun.
However, I use a little bendy phone holder on my saddle horn and listen to my music on speaker phone so I can still hear all the nothingness my horse likes to spook at. |

| Heavy metal really gets me going. SO - way back when when I roadraced motorcycles instead of barrel racing I decided to listen to some motivational tunes during a practice session. I pulled in after my first lap and shed the plugs. Could not do it.
With barrel racing I might hear what song is on when they call my name, but by the time I'm in the alley I don't hear anything.
For straight forward exercising I know you don't need the same concentration and would say if you only had one ear bud in you'd be ok, but you'd be a little off balance maybe. But riding with both ears out of the equation might be a little dangerous. But you may be ok too. I'd give it a try and see how you do. |

Wilson is my brother. I rarely miss a day riding him, even when the weather isn’t the best. If something poses a danger, he will wheel around so fast....I can sense when he’s going to do that just quick enough to go to the Horn. |

It helps me time my trot and lope time each direction and helps me really study the horses moves and think about what I'm really asking them to do for me. When I dont use them, my mind wonders and people talk to me (I ride at a city indoor) so I dont get as much done with each horse and I can still hear what goes on around me. I love spotify! Music and podcasts help pass the time on conditioning days!

| I think if it's possible, you could just listen to it on speaker. I've thought about wearing headphones but feel like it's dangerous as you're not as prepared or aware. But maybe just hook the phone to your belt loop and put it on speaker! |

| I think it can be relaxing which is a good thing. My routine to keep mine legged up is to long trot and lope to 3 or 4 songs, walk a few then repeat. I play the music on my speaker and when my horses hear it they know to get started. I swear if a heavy beat/rock song comes on they pick up the pace, lol. I don’t think having the music on has interefeared with anything. |

I'm like a squirel, my mind all over the place and it helps me to listen and focus on what I'm doing. Who knows I may just forget what I'm doing and fall off. |

Phone goes in its holder on my saddle or in my pants pocket, bluetooth earphones or on speaker if I forgot to charge the headset, and off we go. Location: Northeast SD | Personally I don't think it is a good idea. At least with earbuds. I like to be aware of my surroundings, hear how to horse is breathing, if any joints are 'clicking', listen to the pattern of their feet hitting the ground. I am constantly analyzing for anything that seems off. You need to get used to the 'normal' of each horses sounds to see if anything is off.
If I'm riding in the arena or just walking I will turn music on but not in earbuds. |

| I love music, when ever I can I listen to music, I'm always listening when im riding, but I never listen to it with earbuds in, I always just play it on the the speaker of my phone, I have my dogs always with me and I like to listen for a vehicle or anything that could spook my horse. I also like to think that it gets them a little rodeo broke! |

I try to think of where their feet are, how they are shaping around my legs, etc.... In a way, I’m actually more aware, if that makes any sense. |

I tried to use both ear buds, but didn't like it. One is ok. But I really prefer it to be on speaker. |

Location: Fort Worth / Springtown | Repetive circles and straight lines in the same ole places, music certainly helps me pass the time and helps keep me from lazy riding....and I know horses get bored too, so quite possibly they might enjoy it (I don't use earphones....either speaker phone or radio playing outside).
I saw a video, today, of a pigeon on the streets with people all around, bobbing his head and hopping to the beat from a guy playing a guitar. And we've seen videos of horses bobbing to music....

For those that say it is dangerous - I read an article regarding a horse trainer who was deaf and the colts were much less reactive to things since he couldn't hear anything and react, they also didn't over react. He just pays attention to what is going on around him which one should do anyway. I think if you are comfortable with your surroundings music is a great motivator and relaxer. |

| I don’t think it’s dangerous, but I think it is rude to the horse. When you’re riding, you’re having a conversation with the horse.
It would be like if you went on a walk with a friend and one of you had headphones in while the other was trying to have a conversation…
Background music/radio playing doesn't bother me, I usually tune it out and don't even know what is playing.

She doesn’t like it. It’s hard for me to explain her reasoning because I don’t understand it very well. She thinks I’m sending messages to the beat of the music and that I don’t realize it. I don’t agree.
I think it’s something to do with husbands who actually enjoy certain benefits of being hard of hearing. Ahem! |

Location: Kansas | Last winter I bought a Tenergy Bluetooth Beanie (knit hat) for winter riding to tunes. It also allows me to answer my phone and talk. It was pretty inexpensive, warm and works great! Unless you turn the volume up really loud you can still hear your surroundings. |

Location: Idaho | My favorite thing to do in this world is listen to music while I ride. Been doing it since I was a kid with a walkman! I then had an Ipod shuffle which was awesome. Now I just listen to Pandora or downloaded songs on my phone. I don't use earbuds anymore because I just let my phone play on its speaker. I'm by myself out in the country so it doesn't bother anyone. I'm the kind of person who works or studies better if I'm listening to music. I say, if you enjoy it, do it. |

| I do! I ride with earbuds, and have one in and one out so I can still hear. And of course I don't blast the music. But I figure the horse will hear anything before I would anyway, so you just have to pay attention. That's just my 2 cents though. |

I would rather hear the hoofs hitting the ground, the cicadas, the eagles, the wind in the pines, but that is just me. My daughter seldom rides without her speaker playing. Horses should be enjoyable. So.....do what you enjoy. |

It really freaks me out to feel like I might miss hearing something that I need to be paying attention to - I HAVE to be able to hear what's going on around me. I go with one earbud in or with it on speaker. I really enjoy it on the days that I'm just long trotting a few miles or cleaning stalls. |

Mine enjoys my music too.....I tend to play it when cleaning stalls/feeding/brushing etc.
Although I'm not sure if she likes the music or if she likes watching me make a fool of myself dancing and singing.  |

Plus, I think he listens more to the music in my pocket than the other noises around( he is 4, its pretty normal when its cold) |

I also want to hear my horse's foot fall and how he's breathing. I want to feel how he's moving and responding, whether I'm out checking cattle, ponying or I'm in the arena. I also do a lot of "soaking" (just sitting on the horse after they've done something good ), I can't read and feel my horse accurately if I've got earbuds and music in my ear.

Location: OH | If you like to sing with the music while riding make sure that none of the music has a word that sounds like WHOA !!!! Trust me----it can get ugly when a horse slams on the brakes completely unexpected while I am enjoying my jam. LOL |

| I listent to music or podcasts all the time while riding. I usually just play it over my phone and have my phone in my pocket. If you wanted to use headphones, get a pair of Afterschokz brand. They are more expensive, but sit on your ears, not in your ears, and lets you hear all the outside noise at the same time. I use them for running, and can hear the cars and everything around me. |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | I quit using earbuds and just listen to Pandora on speaker. Occassionally, I won't listen to music at all. Those horses know the track around the 25 acre pasture so well that any little thing out of place, and they alert me. Even before their ears perk up, I can feel when they are on alert. We let a neighbor keep 8-9 heifers there but otherwise it's just typically a little boring routine. If a donkey suddenly pops his head out of the brush next door, or a rabbit runs, or something like that, it will get a little exciting for a second or two, but I can tell what's coming a split second ahead of time, even with music. |

Yep, I live about 100 miles north of Edinburg. We are surrounded by farm land and on the west side of us is a little subdivision. I have seen drug mules walking my fence line to the neighborhood. About a mile away is a little creek with brush and you see cars parked on the bridge waiting to pick up illegals early in the morning or late at night. A friend even had one of the illegals wave a bandanna at him thinking he was a coyote. So, no music for me. Lots of drugs and illegals are moved through our surrounding little towns. |

Ditto... we have geese and deer, and sometimes even coyotes.. I just like to hear things too... but I do listen to my music from my pocket.. it's loud enough I can still hear everything else, but can sing along.. |

Location: WA | I would just do one ear bud or listen from the speaker on your phone. Then you can be more aware of your surroundings. I let my son listen to music while conditioning (he is 12) if he has it on speaker as long as he can hear me. I listen to music a lot when I ride. |
