are you doing anything special to prepare or help your horses through this arctic blast? They’re telling us we will be about -40!

Holy moly. Real temp? our wind chill is supposed to hit that but real temps not nearly that bad. I am just planning on leaving mine in the barn out of the wind with lots  of hay and checking water more often. Other then that they will survive. They did a few years ago when it seemed like the entire winter was an arctic blast.

I’m not nearly as concerned as 2013/2014 winter. We will be dry and cold. During the last time we got to -20wind chill it was rain, sleet, then the arctic blast!

Lots of hay and breaking water consistently.

Free choice hay. Shelter out of the wind and heated waterers we’ll be checking to make sure they keep up.

I’m less worried about the cold and more worried about the temp swing when it’s 40-50* this weekend.

I know I saw how cold it was going to get. They sad the coldest air/wind chill temps in 25 years! Holy moly! I thought about the horses, dogs, etc. that will be impacted. Stay safe and warm (and pets, horses too). Please be careful as it will be bad.

anyone else love their leather gloves like me?  i dont want to wear anything else to the barn but when it gets under 20 degrees my fingers freeze.  Well i saw the other day someone suggest to wear surgicle gloves under them and let me tell you it works!  I couldnt believe how warm they stayed!  My didgets will survive the artic blast!

Our actual temp tonight will be -40 degrees they're saying....wind chills approaching -70 degrees. Hay nets in the lean to, bedded down with straw, round bale, and heated water. They seemed really happy to see me as they came running to the gate for their morning alfalfa in this -48 feels like temp this morning!

We aren't going to be cold cold bitter cold, but the temp swing is still going to be worrisome here in VA. I had one this morning that walked off from her feed so I'll be watching her carefully through the day and evening as the front sweeps through. Pretty much free choice hay for all, but the wind will make them work to catch it!

Our high is currently 12.  Our low tonight is supposed to be -17.  Tomorrow's high is -8 and low is -18.  Wind around 10-15 both days, tapering off Wed night.  The wind chills are supposed to be in the -40s.

Everything is cancelled pretty much, with question marks for Thurs.

My horses are on a round of zesterra and THE electrolyte plus (himalayan salt) with heated water tubs and as much hay as they can stuff their faces with, plus some extra grain.  We move the hay around to quiet areas out of the wind to make them move. We feed small squares, so that's easy to do.

One of my main concerns in a cold snap is that they will eat hay and not drink enough water. So...we offer them a bucket of warm water with a cup of rice bran meal stirred in. They will drink that down a couple of gallons at a time. It's a good way to ensure they stay hydrated and they love it.

We're in Northeast KS with predicted wind chills close to -20 and actual temps about -10 tomorrow morning. Even the pasture horses are in the barn and we're alternating 3 in stalls, 3 in the pen that includes part of the barn. One set goes in at 5 p.m. when we feed, then we switch at 9 p.m. for night chores and again about 6:20 a.m. for morning chores. So far we haven't put the heated water bucket out, but I told my husband we'll have to use it tonight and tomorrow. One stall has a tank with a heater in it and the barn lot has a tank with a heater, but the other two stalls aren't set up for heaters except the bucket. We'll end up hanging it in one stall and the other horse can reach across the wall  and drink from it too. We're also loading them up on hay and everyone has a blanket on. We've got fleece & wool coolers  plus Back on Track & Draper sheets that can be added as liners under the medium weight blankets if needed. The barn cats are going to need to jump up on the stall walls and drink from the heated bucket or we'll have to fill the other stall tank up high enough that they can reach it because I know their rubber water pan will freeze tonight.

-35 or so actual temp expected tonight here with windchills this morning in the -50s. All the horses were happy and spunky. We put some in stalls as we are in the flat land of ND and the wind is killer as we don't have any wind blocks. Each pen has a shelter but we allow those who can't handle stalling to have access to our indoor arena so they can get fully out of the wind and relax. They get along just fine with plently of hay and warm water.

Yeh...I think we will stick with the north central TX weather.

It's not that bad even if the Arctic Blast comes this far south. The nice weather in southern CA isn't worth the rest of it. LOL

The peeps in the Central Plains and upper Mid-west have it rough though. Be safe.

We have been in the -10s & -20 the last few weeks off and on. We haven't been anywhere close to above freezing in weeks.. maybe months.. I honestly can't remember. Haha.

They did close schools today and tomorrow as our actual temps are expected to be below -40 and windchills are in the -60s right now. Most people still had to work today though.

When we are in the -teens to 20s and windchills in the -30s we still go to class and I walk my butt around my univeristy campus... it isn't exactly fun but they can't cancel at that temp because those temps are common in winter for us. This -40 actual temps and windchills in the -60s and someplaces -70 is an entirely different ball game. The city I live in declared a city wide emergency and more business are shutting down now and are expected to be closed tomorrow. When we get a blizzard and 2 feet of snow dumps on us, that doesn't stop us up here in the north here but -60 wind chill apparently does.

I have been in the house most of the day. Not much to do when it is this cold. The worst part is when your car doesn't start in these temps and you wanna go somewhere or you have to. Most of us have plug ins on our cars to warm them but not everyone does...

AZ sounds really nice right about now. Actually, all the local schools here near STL are closed for tomorrow. That neverrrrr happens for just cold weather. But yeah. I pretty well avoid going outside. Feed the horses, check on them and break water at least once during the day, feed once more, and other than that....I stay inside.

I will say it's been so cold this winter that when it gets up to mid 30s and sunny I'm like this us GLORIOUS! Lol!

I know. We lived in Indy for a long time. And they are going to get to 20 below! That's crazy.

I don't remember it getting that cold in the 25 years that we lived there. They said it is the coldest temps (air and wind chill) we have seen in 25 years.  It seems to be really, really bad. I am not going to complain about 25 tonight.

We got to -32F last night with 24 mph winds. I took the loader and pushed up a wall of snow higher than the horses to give the horses a windbreak and put straw bales in for them. Well they are still alive this morning and eating out of their round bale of hay. We are supposed to get colder tonight. Right now they have the most beautiful white long eyelashes on them. They seem to be very content. One thing that you learn up here is you leave your horses outside so that they get haired up for this kind of weather. You need to keep all the feed in front of them they can eat. Its the hay that keeps them warm. I will see if I can get pictures.

our school districts are open and we are about an hour south of STL. In our particular case some of our students are better off coming to school than staying home, at least they will have an adequate source and heat and warm food!

We put our horses up in the barn last night and we left them up this morning. We never leave them up in the barn for more than overnight but with the windchill today we figured they will appreciate it.

I truly truly DISLIKE winter with a passion LOL

Wow, I can't even imagine those kinds of temps. What do you guys do, stay inside the whole time? Do you go to work/school, etc?? Never experienced that kind of cold. We are in the 70's this week, chance of rain over the weekend. I'm in AZ.

Lol!

our school districts are open and we are about an hour south of STL.

We must live pretty close....I'm about 30 min south of STL!

Horses survived just fine and I still went to work during the "polar vortex." They got lots of hay & plenty of water. Mine are always on MVP Gastro-plex anyway so that helps in times like this. More concerned about going from -40 wind chills to 55 degrees days later. I did wake up to a lovely surprise yesterday morning, which was the coldest day. The drywall in my house had condensation from the moisture in the air in my house and the dry frigid outside air and was wet in a lot of places and one bedroom had 1/2" of frost on the inside. All my windows were iced over in the inside.

Oh geez... that is really insult to injury. With all the frightening cold air and then you have to deal with the house in those cold temps!

Wow!!!

At least the 'ponies' are doing good throughout all this cold weather. They usually do, we worry about them way more than they do themselves. LOL

Hope you got the house taken care of.

Mine did great too.....they didn't eat near as much hay as I anticipated (I threw out a LOT). They drank plenty of water. They're much more hardly than me, that's for sure!

Sorry to hear about your house....I hope you don't have any long term issues from all this!

FLITASTIC - 2019-01-29 10:28 AM Yep, Global warming sure is killing this planet.. LOLOL Today we are sunny and 75 with a low of 50
I need to move wherever you are!

Now you are just being mean!

Just tormenting all of us with your nice, warm weather! Bad BB buddy!

SOUTHERN CA......... but we got rain coming this weekend.. LOL

And NO... DON'T move here unless you want to pay 1100.00 for truck tags every year and live in a sanctuary state..

Yeh...I think we will stick with the north central TX weather.

It's not that bad even if the Arctic Blast comes this far south. The nice weather in southern CA isn't worth the rest of it. LOL

The peeps in the Central Plains and upper Mid-west have it rough though. Be safe.

95% of the time I don't mind winter... I love it actually and do a lot of snowmobiling.. This blast was way below normal. My vehicle wouldn't start this morning... A Water pipe froze in my house and a few friends diesels gelled up... But it's over with now. It has finally warmed up to - 8 below and no wind. I took my horses blankets off (they normally don't wear any but with the wind chill at - 45 below they got one). It's supposed to be almost 40 above this weekend...... It's funny you talk about staying in Texas! Because I say the same thing about here. I'll stay up here! You can keep the 95 to 100 and humid in the summer haha! :)

My trio had a blast playing around on the -15 real temps. Real feel said -25. Running, bucking, rearing, but at least they drank well and the cows seemed better in this than that wet heavy rain.
We're supposed to be 19 today, 38 tomorrow, and 47 Sunday. I was super worried because it was supposed to rain, but it appears, that was a lie, for now.

Well, we survived!

The scariest part of the whole ordeal was when we lost power at 11:30 Tuesday night.  It was off for 2 hours before our HERO linemen got her back up and running.  Elation when it came back on was an understatement.  Horror to Cloud 9 made for a sleepy Wednesday.

The horses did great! I must thank Krystal for the THE Electrolyte Plus that she had sent.  It's basically Himalayan salt, and that increased their water intake.  Plus we have started on Zesterra daily in these cold snaps. We did it last year when it was cold for a long stretch and here the last wekk.  Helps so much!

Now, make sure the ground hog does us well, and it'll be good!  So excited for 50 this weekend! The roads need it!

Our horses are pretty used to it up here and spend all winter in 300gm turnouts plus they have a pretty good winter coat, but when the air temp in -40, they come into a heated barn. weather like that can even be hard on horses who are used to this weather. Colic is always a concern and they tend to drink less when its cold. always provide lots hay and warm water for them

Thank you, I'm hoping the house will be fine. As of this morning I can no longer see any moisture, but I'm sure the inside of the walls are still damp. Luckily the majority was in rooms I was planning to repaint this spring and my dad is pretty handy with drywall, so we'll make sure to replace any that needs replaced. I do have a humidifier on my furnace, which is most likely the main culprit besides my terrible insulation. I had it set to what it should be for when it's 20 degrees or so outside, I forgot to turn it completely off for the duration of the vortex. I was so concerned about other things. It's still only 3 degrees here and we got more snow last night.

I board my horses so their care wasn't really up to me, but I was driving out there checking regularly just in case. Hopefully everyone else came though ok & will come through ok with the 90 degree temperature swing we're about to have. I know I'm sure ready for some consistency with the weather

When it gets this cold I force feed salt to my horses so they drink. Couple of ounces per hd per day is all it takes. I just mix it in their daily feed.

This is what I do, put it in their grain. I worry about the extreme temp changes.
