| I have a MJP granddaughter whom I am interested in possibly breeding next year. This will be her first foal if I decide to do it. I love everything about this thing but looking to improve a couple things on her. She is a big mare so size is not something I am interested in. I believe some of the "faults" are errors in training. Anyway, I am looking for something that has quick feet, big natural stop and a refined head. Not looking for DTF or Streak of Fling.. I am not sure how well anyone knows any working cow horses but seem to think that might be our best cross..If this is not the place to ask about the working cow horses anyone have suggestion to where to find a good place to inquire? Any questions about her please feel free!! Thank you in advance!!
Here is her pedigree

Yes! I am a HUGE fan of Hired Gun (Playgun x Peppys Serenade by Peppy San Badger). He's earned roughly $36k in cutting events, and his owner has recently had him started in the roping events. His first big foal crop was this past year, so they aren't out there performing yet, but he is throwing some super nice foals. We have a 10mo filly out of a TB mare that we are already so impressed with we have decided to re-breed the dam to him twice in 2019.

| Question about PSB....do they buck...I have heard that they are awful as far as being known to buck..never dealt with one but I hate horses that buck..honestly have been shying away from PSB because of hearing that they were buckets..my husband has dealings with a mare that is by PSB and she's in her 20s and still bucks..#thisgirlcantdeal

I believe he got hurt either while training for his futurity year or during it, and therefore wasn't shown. He has a great temperament, and from the videos posted on his facebook, his foals that are out there running are very nice. We should be having a grey filly ( ) hit the ground in about 50 days, and I am hoping she will inherit Firewater Fiesta's turning style! His first few foal crops were pretty small, so most of his foals will be 6 and under, and his facebook page showcases how a lot of them are doing.

I've heard that from a lot of people, but I have never had a PSB that bucked. I definitely wouldn't stand for that either, especially after 20 years!

I don't have a facebook, but I do view public horse pages so I can see what they're up to. IMO, Playgun horses are sensible, gritty and don't take things too personally, but I have known a few own daughters of Playgun that were hot and kind of out there, so I am sticking with own sons (and granddaughters instead of own daughters)
Awhile back, another poster mentioned not to breed Hired Gun to a hot, hot mare (she knew him when he was owned by some folks out of Canada), but based on the bloodlines I've seen everyone breeding to him, the foals all seem personable, friendly and very level headed. Our filly is wicked fast and very smart, but her personality is more like Ferdinand the bull- she loves to sleep and be around people, and has just been a dream to handle since birth.

| Sweet!! That's good to know, thank you!! I think her "hot" is some not so good years in training and her eagerness to get in there and work..shes a sweet tough mare..Im partial I'm sure but I love her to pieces! If I take the hired gun, hopefully the PSB will be over ruled by the others..I will deal with hot before the Bronc...lol
Plus I love Ferdinand so I'll take that any and everyday off the week!!

| Sorry I'm peppering with questions...but I read somewhere if its the mares first foal it woulda be wise to breed her to something"less expensive" to see how she does? Or is that kind of a crap shoot? |

Sorry I'm peppering with questions...but I read somewhere if its the mares first foal it woulda be wise to breed her to something"less expensive" to see how she does? Or is that kind of a crap shoot? The rule of thumb I've heard (and loosely followed) is the stud fee should be no more than 20% of what the mare is worth. Although if you find a stallion that has the qualities you are looking for, then I say if he is within your budget and you would kick yourself if you didn't breed your mare to him (say he passes away or his stud fee increases the next year based on his PE or performance throughout the year), then go for it!
With our TB mare, I send in her contract(s) right away to take advantage of the early booking discounts, plus we usually receive a discount for her being a "daughter of a proven stallion" (she is a daughter of Big Brown, the 2008 KY Derby and Preakness Stakes winner), so that helps when budgeting. With our QH mares, none are "daughters", but I still like to get the early booking discounts, or some (like HG) have Black Friday specials.
ETA: Breed within your means, and I truthfully think it's better to breed a good mare to a better stallion versus a good mare to a mediocre stallion.

Location: Gainesville, TX | Not all PSBs buck but a lot of them do. There is some truth to the claim anyway. We have had several of them on our ranch. They are tough minded and good using horses. Some of them settle down after a couple years. Some don’t. But PSB will only be a part of the horse’s pedi. Unless you have one that’s double bred or something. They are athletic. Smart. MJPs tend to be pretty calm. You may be fine if the PSB is back a couple lines. |

I have a friend with a PG daughter, and she's given them some nice cutters. They were full cow---sire was a Haidas Little Pep stud. They were sane, friendly horses with nice butts! The dam was very stand-offish and watchy, but she was also blind in one eye, so I attributed her attitude to that. I've only ever been around cutters talking about their PGs, but never heard anything bad.

| I know you said no DTF. But I would seriously consider Freckles Ta Fame. His dam is by FG and out of a Colonel Freckles mare. I know Can Man’s dam well. She is extremely quick footed and passed that down to Can Man. He runs exactly like her but he’s faster. He also has a very pretty head.
I personally wouldn’t go straight working lines on her myself. I’ve never had much luck with a race crossed on cow bred myself. They’ve all been broncs. If I wanted to throw some cow in the mix, I’d go with one that’s already been proven to work. |

Location: Texas Big Country | I want you to try Fiestas Gotta Gun so I can see how it works, lol! I have sure been looking at him too. Weatherford Equine has been good for me to work with and their chute fees are not rediculous.

| I have known quite a few PSB horses, the mares are pi$$y but none of them were broncs. They were tail ringers, fast, gritty little rockets. I've had more experience with PSB mares but have known a few geldings. Those weren't buckers either but stubborn, however that could have come from any line. PSB athleticism is unreal...
I have always liked this stud http://www.rodeosolutions.com/Streakin_Ali.html

Location: Arizona | If you decide to go the Playgun route, also have a look at Ranger Cookie. Very accomplished in the arena (both in barrels and roping). My boyfriend's rope horse is a Ranger Cookie son, and we have been so impressed with him. Ours isn't a big horse, stands right at 15 hands, but is just beautifully made. Cute little baby doll head. Pulls steers around like he's 16 hands. No buck at all, but he is kinda spooky and snorty on the ground. Dependable as Hell under saddle though.
