You really need to find the mouth pc your horse prefers (yes there are times you need a little more than the horse prefers but you have to start with a base point). Why fight mother nature? Then decide if he needs a shank or even if he needs a curb, then what material curb. It all goes together along with YOUR hands to get success.
Im helping someone now with this issue. Was using a twisted wire dog bone jr cow (which is my least favorite bit of all time) with a chain curb. Her horse was front endy, fighting his face, wouldn't let you handle him, didnt want to collect, super sensitive... and this person has good light hands.
I had her try a chain oring. He still mouthed this bit a lot but was much more comfortable. She could touch him thru the turn, he would collect up thru his body, no more front dump. I personally dislike orings for normal use... I find a lot of people tug and pull and stay in contact with their mouth causing the horse to tug back. Then they wonder why the horse isn't light and add a GM to fix that and the horse dumps even more on the front end.
Both mouths lay on the tongue but the dog bone doesn't conform as well thru the bars like a chain... just a small detail can irritate a light mouth, then add a curb and it worsens.
So I guess if you can find someone who has them and try a number of different bits you may be better off than guessing.
