With the bug season upon us I am looking to stock up on some GOOD fly spray for the barn and trailer - what is the best kind?

I borrowed some from a fellow boarder the other day when I realized I was out. He had the yellow bottle of Pyrhana. It is amazing. Oil based, smells great, and it literally knocks the flies off when I spray it and I don't see any the rest of the visit. I went and picked up a bottle for myself a couple days later.

Yep, tried them all...... Pyranha yellow bottle. Stays on them since its oil based... I buy it buy the case from my feed store. 

Ditto to Pyrhana. The only thing I have to add is, be careful applying if you turn them out during the day and you live somewhere HOT. Because it is oil based, it burnt my geldings back once while I was living in GA. I only apply to legs now if they are out during the day.

The green bottle of Pyrhana works pretty good too. 

B Free of Flies! Hands down... plus it has a coat conditioner in it. I use to be a die hard tri tech fan because of the sunscreen but the B free of flies knocks down the flies instantly and keeps them off without an oily residue. Just reminded me I need to order some more! I love the flairisol sprayer too. 

Interesting!! Where I live it frequently gets above 100-110 degrees in summer and I never had that issue. I wonder if its related to humidity? Where I am is extremely dry, no humidity. But I will geep an eye out on it!

Maybe it was just a freak thing and my luck LOL....I felt SO bad though. His entire back was full of scabs from the blisters. If I do apply to their back, I make sure its late in the afternoon when the sun isnt very strong.

Are there any water-based fly sprays you guys have had luck with?  I've got one that is allergic to any oil base we've used in the past so we typically mix our own, but they're never as effective it seems.  

Ohhhhh, maybe thats it. I put mine on every evening and I brush it in with a brush and not to thick/wet. Almost sounds like that horse might have had an allergic reaction to it as well combined with sun. 

Hmm, good to know. I live in South Georgia so I'll keep that in mind. I usually only do legs anyway. I feel like they can swish their tails or shake heads. LOL I'd rather he not found his feet into the ground all day.

Ultra Shield the black bottle works great.  It is water based.

Pyranha spray! You might also consider Fly Eliminators, we have put them out for a few years now, my horses rarely have the big horse flies on them. They will still get the itty bitty biting flies that look like the regular house flies and thats when I use the spray.....or when we haul.

my horse get welts from Pyhrana yellow. It does work and if I have some I will use it sparingly on legs only.

I have been using Pyhrana Yellow bottle and use it only on the lower body, never on necks and back, just the upper legs and lower and very lighty, this stuff is strong and I can see it to were if put on too heavy it could cause problems..

Gordon's.  The best - and has sunscreen and a somewhat pleasant scent.  

The only wish I have for Pyrahana is that it came in a concentrate form so I could mix my own, but with it being oil, it makes sense. More expensive due to this, but totally worth it.

Last year I rotated three different fly sprays.  Force in the green, red and blue bottles.  Where do you get the B Free of Flies from.  I've not seen it in TSC or any place.

I order it online. Several different places sell it. I just watch for sales and who has the best prices at the time. I order enough to get free shipping. Teskeys sells it. I'm waiting for my feedstore to hopefully start carrying it soon! But in the meantime I just search around for the best deal.

Don't inhale it or you will be coughing and gasping for air for 5 minutes LOL. It's the only thing I've found to actually last through an entire ride. Previous to this I was using Pyranha.

The flairisol sprayer is awesome,  it sprays at any angle. I ordered 2 of those sprayers one for my barn and 1 for my trailer and I usually just buy the gallon refill.

Not a fly spray. But here in Ky we have ticks bad.  I learned online from a vet,  a DIY spot on.  Great for ticks and works ok for flies. Take a 12 cc syringe, draw up 4-6 cc of mineral oil. Then draw up the rest with permethrin concentrate.  Gently shake it to mix. Put it on like you do The Freedom spot on.  The knees, the hocks and above the ankles, along their whole topline. Along their mane, base of their tail. Between their ears, between their eyes. Along their belly etc. Works for 2-3 weeks.  Is cheap esp if you have mulitple horses!  A lot of horse may move around or stomp when you apply it.   It's not because it burns them. But it feels funny with the oil moving around.  I do their legs first.
