Looking for suggestions. First time I have a horse that doesn't like anything on her hind legs. I worry about protection. I haven't had any problems .....yet. Any suggestions? Also would love to hear experiences of people who successfully don't use hind boots on their horses.

My older horse hates back boots. He’s 23 this year and still runs every weekend. If I think he really needs something due to the footing I’ll wrap his back in polos but only right before he runs and then pull them right after. Most of the time (98%) though he’s only in front boots and bells

I have one horse I have to use hind leg protection on just because she gets into the ground so hard and I use polos on her. I only use fronts on my other horse.
I am more concerned with protection for the front unless you have one that interferes on the inside on the back end.

I know several vets/barrel racers. I noticed once that most of them don't use ANY hind leg protection and I asked why. They didn't feel they were needed. And these vets that run barrels have some very high quality top 1D horses. They said if ground was bad or would burn fetlocks they either polo wrap or use regular skid boots.

I like polo wraps on the back because they fit tighter and don't let dirt in. I've had several horses who don't like back boots but every one of them has been cool with polos.

My good mare did not care for hind boots. I would warm her up, put the boots on about 10 horses before, trot her a little bit, run her, and then take them off immediately.

The buckle style leather skid boots that dont need to be done up tight work on my one rope horse will not wear hind boots, as in turns a kids horse into a bronc never got over it 15 years old. She stops really really hard and on barrels sits and slides around.
