Something I've never even thought of but I'm thinking now of maybe trying to get a good one. We live on black dirt,  but its clay .. horrible horrible dirt... I had an area of the pasture my husband tilled up with his kubota. At first it was ok, not great, but workable... now after all the rain we cant get it right.. just big chunks of black dirt come up in the tiller and clog it up... I cant really have dirt hauled in, we plan on moving eventually and dont want to spend the money on something we can take with us. I'm just wondering if it's even worth it to try and buy a good drag that will help with this dirt. Any suggestions on good drags that arent crazy expensive?

For my arena ( with decent dirt and old sand) I use a tiller.  However, I also have a track around twenty acres that I work up and a pattern area, in the middle, of the field.  For the track and inside area I use a regular disc behind the tractor.  Years ago this field was farmed alfalfa, then we did some other crops....now it's my weed field LOL.  The ground is less favorable to working up easily....I use the disk behind the tractor as if you were working a field.  Following that I use the tiller if further work needs to be done declumpling.  So far I haven't had to use the tiller to much this year.  I think the key is working it before you loose all the moisture.  Dry ground seems to be more likely to clump / clods.

i know you cant take it with you but could you add some sand to the clay and help break it up when it dries out a little?  the drag of choice around here for red clay is the revel 4n1

I got a professional opinion on it before, someone that does arenas around these parts and is familiar with this nasty clay.. he said theyd have to scrape it, put down some type of crushed rock, maybe millings, or fines.. and then lay arena dirt because when it rains here all the dirt will just wash away and wed lose it thru the clay.. something along those lines .. that's all fine and dandy but I'm going to wait till we move to invest that much. I think he has a disc he can use and then maybe try tilling after. I dont need perfection by any means but I dont feel confident riding on it as it is now.. the area we tilled up, when it rains, it turns into almost quick sand type .. very deep and very sticky!

We have red clay; a disc with a chain drag behind it works nicely. My husband rigged the drag to the disc so I don't have to go over everything twice.

I have a chat and sand mixture at my place and I just use a disc and have an old railroad tie behind it to smooth it out. It’s nothing fancy but it does the job!
