I like the Jeff Smiths saddles too, but the Coats are just a much better fitting saddle if you have a stocky cow bred horse, I love how they sit down on the horse not perched and if you have one with the dropped rigging its even a better fit. Its just a better close contact saddle I feel..

I had both, if you're going for saddle fit go with the Coats. The Jeff Smith wide didn't fit my cow horse bred mare, it wasn't wide enough. I did like how the Jeff Smith fit me, it sat deeper than the Coats one did. They both are good saddles, if you are able to try one out I would.

I have a Coats and have never had a Jeff Smith to compare. I like my Coats and it seems to fit different horses. I talked to Larry Coats when I was buying it and he explained the difference between the handmade Coats and the Lazy L saddles. He told me that they are similar but that the handmade saddles will have a more comfortable seat. I saved money and bought the Lazy L. I am sure that the handmade saddles are much better, but the Lazy L fit my price range.

I went with a Coats. Many have said I will not be disappointed, so we shall see. Thank you for all the opinions. Have any of you tried his balance pads by chance?
