Vetericyn - used it twice daily on my mare.  The gel kind is better because it sticks longer.  Do not pick at them, just spray the Vetericyn.  It worked really well.

This is exactly what I use! Definitely the gel!

I am working on a bad case of scratches that made my mares hind ankle swell up.  She hasn't had a case this bad in quite a few years.  None of my tried and true things worked. I went searching online and found this recipe: 1 tube bactatracin ointment (antiboitic cream), I tube cortizone (anti itch) cream, and 1 tube Desitin. Mix it all up and wipe it on the affected area 1 to 2 times a day.  Don't wash off, just use a soft cloth and wipe the area clean then reapply.  Took the swelling out of my mares ankle overnight.  I have her now with no scabs at all and pink skin.  Reapplying 1 time daily until the hair grows back in.

I use this same recipe but add some generic miconazole (monistat), also.  My mare had a horrible case of scratches this spring.  Her legs swelled and it was awful.  I would wash them with betadine surgical scrub and then put the cream mixture on daily.  This is the only thing I found that really cleared it up.

I will have to add that next time.  I couldn't believe how fast this stuff worked...it was amazing.  Scabs just fell off and clean pink skin underneath.   She was immediately comfortable and didn't mind me messing with her ankle.

I use iccathamol (spelling?) and the scabs fall off in a day or two with pink clear skin underneath.

I’ve had great luck with mixing Tea Tree Oil and Aquaphor. Scabs fall off and there will be nice healthy pink skin underneath. Have now used it twice with great results.

Add a little DMSO to either of these mixes and you have a very nice and potent scratches healing goo.

Two years ago I bought shoofly leggings for my horses and have not had scratches since so that also works.

I had to deal with scratches for the first time this summer - the horse started wearing shoo fly boots in the spring, before she got scratches!

My other 3 wear shoo fly boots as well and they’re fine....

I've been scrubbing and using desitin on my mare. I'm going to go buy the stuff to make your mixture.

I've never dealt with scratches, my broodmare has got them terrible. Someone suggested Dex but where she is in foal I can give her that.

It's awful this year, I know lots of people that are dealing with scratches!
