Do you drive the speed limit?  Five over?  It's been suggested to me that 67 mph is the best speed to travel for gas mileage savings and for the longivity of your vehicle.  I'm not sure if that's specific to the make of the truck or not.  That got me to thinking about what speed everyone else drives as they haul.

I used to run about 75 but after I got in a trailer wreck due to a blown driver side tire I drive the speed limit.

Typically drive the speed limit if I'm pulling a trailer.  If weather/road conditions are bad or there's a lot of traffic I will drive slower.  Nobody seems to understand that trucks pulling trailers can't stop on a dime.

Depends on the road and conditions. If I'm on I-95 south of Richmond and there is no traffic I will cruise about 75 or so. In traffic I'm a snail. In bad weather I am a snail. On 29 S through the mountains I will run a hill or two but other than that pretty much 50-55. I used to drive faster but I've learned there is less stress if you just take your time.

I am driving miss Daisy... .... During day-time and good conditions I will drive 65-70 depending on speed limit. When there is lots of traffic, rain or at night I will slow down to about 60-65 or slower if need be.

It still amazes me that other people do not know how long it takes to slow a rig dow, especially when it's loaded down with horses.Just absolutely love it when I leave a gap slowing down for a traffic light and one of those darn 4-wheelers whips in right in front of me....

I drive very defensive, will slow down as soon as I think I see an issue coming up. And I know I am peeing in someones wheaties most every time I haul, but I will do everything I can to keep our horses safe. Had a blowout on the front drivers side tire a couple of years back and I was very lucky there was no oncoming traffic because in a split second I swerved into that lane... Luckily I was able to manouver the whole thing back onto the right side of the road before a semi came up to us, but it sure made me pucker up big time!!! We were only doing 65 and looking at the tracks we left I know it would have taken me at least half a mile to get back in the right lane without flipping the whole thing....

Plus our old truck does the best when it's running around that speed, anything over that the gas mileage will become hidious!

I keep up with right lane traffic unless I’m behind someone who can’t do the speed limit.

IMO if the speed limit is 65mph, you are a danger to others going under 60mph.

I also do not want to be the vehicle that everyone is blowing up on and getting over at the last moment - if the greater traffic pattern is traveling 5 over, I’m keeping up.

Utah's interstate speed is listed at 80 MPH.  But most everybody goes 84.9 MPH.

I run the speed limit or what the flow of traffic is doing.  The most danger is the driver that is running slower than the rest of the traffic.

Read an article in a working cow horse/cutting magazine years ago. They had an article on hauling and this question was one of them. They were asking a couple NCHA contestants that hauled all year chasing points. All of them said they drove between 60-65 mph and slowed down on curves and at turns turned very slowly until the trailer tracked straight behind the truck. They all felt this contributed greatly to the longevity of their horses, all were over 15 years with minimal maintenance and still working great. So I drive like a granny. I figure those people would know what they were talking about. Also, since doing that, my horses seem less stressed when hauling.

I drive 65 to 70, mostly because my truck has 4:10 gears and it redlines if I go much faster. But our speed limit is 80 on the interstate and 70 on 2 lane. Personally I don't think I'd be comfortable pulling a trailer going 80. Now driving my car is another story.

I drive 4 over and maintain the same speed as much as possible. I make smooth transitions with turns or my speed to help with gas mileage but also the horse's balance. We are extremely flat here so the biggest worries are red lights or stop signs and other drivers. I think everyone should take a little ride in the back so they can see what a normal car stop feels like for a horse.

I told my husband that he needed to go for a ride in the trailer and I'd drive like he does so he can understand lol! Now that we have the slant and horses are more secure it's a little better for them. But I remember when we used the stock trailer, the horses learned how to balance themselves real quick around corners and coming to a stop. I hopped in the drivers seat as much as possible. He drives an 18 wheeler for a living but hes hauling batteries not horses lol!! I think he forgets.  Even when not hauling and hes driving, I use my passenger side brakes ALOT!

LOL, I had to laugh at Driving Miss Daisy, I'm the same way I know people get ****ed when I'm in front of them on a two lane road, I'm always watching the road like a Hawk when I'm coming up to side roads, if I see a car racing up to the intersection and most of the time it looks like they are going to run the light or stop sign I already got my foot ready for that break when I going to the Vets in Selma I hit the back roads coming off the main highway, people are always in such a hurry around here.

Depends on the wind ... and the weather ....  and the terrian .... and the traffice flow. You certainly don't want to be purposefully going way slower than everyone else, because that can put you at risk (from the driver's that aren't paying attention and come up on you real fast).

If I got a good tail wind going down the interstate, sometimes it's really easy to cruise along at 80 mph without even trying. And sometimes if there a 40 mph side wind I'm fighting, well, then 65 mph might be fast enough!

On the open highway, even with no traffic, I typically keep it under 70. If I don't have a trailer, that's a whole different story

I’m a slow driver I’ll admit it lol but after a blow out on my truck once hauling back from the vet it was a miracle I didn’t lose it so now I’m a 60-65 mph driver... one thing to consider is your tires - a lot of trailers come with cheaper grade tires that aren’t rated for over 65 mph so keep that in mind too. Look up your tires to see what they’re rated for. I buy 14 ply heavy tires for my LQ trailer but still keep it under 65 lol occasionally if cruising down a big hill I’ll let it go over but I don’t accelerate or drive over 65 on purpose any more.

When I haul I drive 60 all the way on any freeway. I may go up to 65, but usually not. I drove from Ca to Pa like this and didn't have a problem with anybody, thankfully. But I don't care about anybody being upset with me for being slower. As I'm sure with all of us, my horses are everything to me and that is the speed I feel comfortable with if I need to react to something. Plus I feel my horses are never stressed about trailer rides.

I am a slow driver and I too had read that it helps horses if no faster than 65, long ago read it.  Plus a big tip if in a construction zone and people are on your butt, hit a traffic barrel and watch how fast and a huge cushion you receive after that.  Works for me!

Interstate speed limit around here is 70....unless the conditions are bad, or it is windy and a pain to keep that speed, or there's a crap ton of traffic, I go 70. I feel like being the pokey person is just as dangerous as driving too fast.

To those who say the speed limit is 80 where you live....I'm pretty sure my blood pressure went up just imagining that. Yikes!

Interesting only responses are those that drive the speed limit.  No one drives five over?

I agree that driving slow impedes the flow of traffic.  That's dangerous too.

Thats why I stay in the outside lane so I wont impede any body thats driving faster then I, but many many times I do have to past but I get right back over to the slower lane. So really I'm not impeding anybody doing 5 under the speed limit but on open Highway I do drive the speed limit, going threw cities is tricky but once out of them its better driving.

When pulling the trailer I stay just a hair under the limit, I dont care if I'm in someone's way, they can go around me if they feel the need. I dont let the flow of the other cars around me pressure me to speed up. I like to leave a very large cushion in front of me, so many cars will zip in it all the time. I'm forced to back off even more to give me the cushion I want. I always leave myself a lot of extra time to get where I'm going. I dont drive obnoxiously slow but I'm not in a hurry either.

They also said that they didn’t make lane changes and bless absolutely necessary. They felt this put more stress on the horses mentally and physically. I tend to agree. I have also quit pulling over on the shoulder to let people pass. Not only has that cut down on flats/blow outs on the truck and trailer, I have seen all kinds of trash on the shoulder from washing machines to trailers left on the shoulder with flats, to cars tagged for towing off.

As someone who has hauled many hundreds of thousands of miles pulling a trailer AND works in a trailer sales and service dealership, the best tip I can give others is to never, ever, ever skimp on tires. They are one of the cheapest investments out there. Blow outs cause expensive damage to fenders and much more...and have killed many people. Also, pay close attention to the temperature. If it's hot, slow down!!!  Without a doubt, this is the primary cause of summer blow outs. Check online to see the "fine print" regarding the speed rating for your tires. Chances are, you'll be suprised by what you learn.

I drive pretty much strictly on road & weather conditions.  If I'm going through a big city with multiple lanes, I'll get in the middle one (or the 2nd from the right if several available) so I am not constantly trying to dodge merging vehicles & can go w/the flow of traffic.  Constantly ticks me off when I leave some space between next vehicle & me for "emergency" braking & some idiot feels the need to fill it.
