Long time of not posting, I've come looking for some positive stories of horses who have had intestine resection surgery for one reason or another and went back to normal use.

My good mare had surgery Wednesday afternoon for Epiploic Foramen Entrapment. She had a hematoma removed as well as approx 10' of her small intestine. She is currently stable and showing all good signs following surgery. I dont care if she ever barrel races again, she can be a trail horse and I'd be happy with that. Just wanted to hear any similar stories.

TIA!

No personal experience, but a good friend's older gelding recovered very well and went on to do whatever she wanted to do with him.  He is still alive and doing well.  I am also aware of a top AQHA pole / barrel gelding that years ago had the surgery and came back to win more AQHA world titles in his events.  Prayers that your horse recovers to tip-top health!!!!

Many horses come back successfully. The problem is down the road. Many times as years go by, scar tissue starts to develop where the splice. Many times the scar tissue eventually caused the intestine to be blocked off and they don’t survive.

SKM - I was curious about this as I read online their life span can be shorter, but didnt see much detail as to why. This makes sense tho.

Thank you

You’re welcome. When Sidekick displaced, they did a belly dump on him. CSU told me that since they cut the intestine horizontally, you don’t have the scar tissue build up like you do with a splice that is vertical. That’s the only reason why I know that. So my info came straight from the surgeons at CSU.
